In this paper, we describe the key features of the recently completed technical design for the International Linear Collider (ILC), a 200–500 GeV linear electron–positron collider (expandable to 1 TeV) that is based on 1.3 GHz superconducting radio-frequency (SCRF) technology. The machine parameters and detector characteristics have been chosen to complement the Large Hadron Collider physics, including the discovery of the Higgs boson, and to further exploit this new particle physics energy frontier with a precision instrument. The linear collider design is the result of nearly 20 years of R&D, resulting in a mature conceptual design for the ILC project that reflects an international consensus. We summarize the physics goals and capability of the ILC, the enabling R&D and resulting accelerator design, as well as the concepts for two complementary detectors. The ILC is technically ready to be proposed and built as a next generation lepton collider, perhaps to be built in stages beginning as a Higgs factory.

The International Linear Collider

The design of the vacuum vessel for the wiggler sections of the ILC damping rings should meet a number of challenging specifications. Synchrotron radiation (SR) power of about 40 kW is generated in each wiggler. The expanding fan of SR reaches the beam vacuum chamber walls in the following wiggler and may cause the following problems: large power dissipation on vacuum chamber walls inside the cryogenic vessel; radiation damage of superconducting coils; high photo-electron production rate causing electron cloud to build up to an unacceptable level. Therefore, the power should be absorbed in places where these effects are tolerable or manageable. Some possible solutions for tackling all SR related problems as well as the vacuum design are discussed.

Mechanical and Vacuum Design of the Wiggler Section of the ILC Damping Rings

A new lattice design for the ILC damping ring has been developed since the beginning of 2008 as a lower cost alternative to the previous OCS6 design. The lattices for the electron and positron damping rings are identical, and are designed to provide an intense, 5 GeV beam with low emittance at extraction. The latest design, presented in this paper, provides sufficient dynamic aperture for the large positron beam at injection. The lattice also meets the engineering requirements for arrangement of the positron ring directly above the electron ring in the same tunnel.

Dco4 lattice design for 6.4 km ilc damping rings

We describe the conceptual design of the vacuum sys- tem for the damping rings of the International Linear Col- lider. The design incorporates a range of techniques to suppress the development of the electron cloud (EC) in the positron ring. These techniques include coatings with low secondary electron yield (SEY), grooved chambers, clear- ing electrodes and antechambers for photoelectron control. The EC mitigation choices are based on the ILC Electron Cloud R&D program, which has been conducted at the Cornell Electron-Positron Storage Ring Test Accelerator (CESRTA) and at other collaborating institutions (1). The conceptual designs for vacuum chambers in drifts, dipoles, wigglers and quadrupoles are presented.

Beam‐Induced Electron Multipacting, Electron Cloud, and Vacuum Design

The longitudinal wake fields have been calculated by using a 3D electromagnetics code, CST Particle Studio, for a number of different vacuum chamber components in the 6.4 km ILC damping ring. Studies of bunch lengthening and single-bunch instabilities have been carried out. Bunch lengthening from a particle tracking code are compared with results from numerical solution of the Haissinski equation. The tracking code is used to predict the threshold for single-bunch instabilities.
