When assessing chronic pain patients (CPP) a series of measures are routinely used to evaluate the severity of symptoms including: pain, psychological distress, disability, illness perception, positive affect and current treatments to manage chronic pain (CP). Clinicians also routinely administer measures of daily activity to determine what activities are being performed and determine how CP inhibits daily functioning, however the meaningfulness of daily activities is not evaluated. The aim of this research was to determine whether CPP who engaged in meaningful daily activity (MDA) reported less severe pain, disability and psychological distress. To test this observation a model of MDA was proposed and tested. One hundred and eight CPP (31 men, 77 women) completed measures of pain, disability, psychological distress, illness perception and dispositional optimism. MDA scales were developed for this study, the Daily Activities Questionnaire (DAQ-R) and the Meaningful Daily Activities Questionnaire (MDAQ-R).
The research hypothesis that CPP who participate in more MDA experienced less severe Psychological Distress was confirmed. However, the hypothesis that CPP who participate in more MDA reported less severe Pain and Disability was not supported.

Meaningful daily activity and chronic pain

The history of gerontology and the experience of aging in Canada is still largely unwritten. This article employs the personal and career biography of British Columbian rehabilitation and dementia care specialist Moyra Jones, an active member in this field of care from the 1960s until the new millennium. I explore how gender, professionalism, treatment options, and emerging ideas about the personhood of individuals with dementia shaped gerontological ideas and practices in the late twentieth century. Pour commencer a combler ce manque, cet article a recours a la biographie personnelle et professionnelle de Moyra Jones, specialiste britannocolombienne des soins de readaptation et de demence et figure active de ce domaine, des annees 1960 au nouveau millenaire. J'y explore la facon dont les questions de genre, le professionnalisme, les options de traitement et les idees nouvelles concernant l'identite individuelle des personnes souffrant de demence ont modele les idees et les pratiques gerontologiques a la fin du 20e siecle.

A Humanist in the House of Old: Moyra Jones and Early Dementia Care in Canada

Our study has two objectives. First, we reviewed the literature, and identified best practices for social model day programs providing care for adults with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Second, in-depth telephone interviews were conducted with directors in all social model day programs (n = 21) dedicated to serving adults with AD in South Carolina to compare practices to those identified. Programs implemented many best practices, despite their rural location and small size. All programs assessed clients' activity preferences, and reassessed activity effectiveness regularly. Most programs provided volunteers and staff with AD-focused training. Many programs incorporated innovative programming such as intergenerational activities. Most programs were offered in a setting not designed for adult day services; thus many programs did not provide suggested environmental features such as extra lighting or walking paths. Evaluating best practices for social model programs for adults with Alzheimer's disease in South Carolina.

The goal of this study was to assess the relationship between three characteristics identified as central to creative expression (CE) activities: creativity, failure-free, and group process with staff-participant engagement and participant affect. An observational study was conducted in an adult day center. Staff-participant interactions (n = 241) were recorded as they participated in sculpture, which is a type of CE activity, and 12 different traditional activities. MANOVA tests revealed that levels of engagement were greater when participants were involved in activities that included the three traits. Greater levels of positive affect were observed when participants were involved in activities that included creativity or group process.
