
BACKGROUND: Bacterial gastroenteritis is a disease in the tropics in the form of inflammation of the stomach and intestines due to several bacteria, such as Salmonella, Campylobacter, Shigella, Escherichia coli, Vibrio, Yersinia, and Listeria with symptoms of diarrhea without or with vomiting and frequent fever. Gastroenteritis is a global disease with the highest prevalence in the agricultural community, especially farmers and fishermen. 


AIM: This research is to determine the potential of leaf and seed extract Moringa oleifera as an alternative therapy for bacterial gastroenteritis.


METHODS: A literature review approach derived from the analysis and synthesis of various related references is used. The author selects journals full text and books published in the last ten years maximum through several databases, namely PubMed, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and Cochrane with the keywords: diarrhea, gastroenteritis, antibacterial, antiulcer, anti-inflammation, and M. oleifera.


RESULTS: Seed and leaf extract M. oleifera played a role in preventing some of the effects of the pathogenesis of diarrhea due to bacterial infection. Methanol, N-hexane, ethyl acetate, flavonoids, phenols, saponins, alkaloids, tannins, and steroids from seed and leaf extract M. oleifera have antibacterial effects. The content of quercetin has an anti-inflammatory effect. The content of tannins, flavonoids, and alkaloids has antidiarrheal activity. The content of ethanol and tannins has an antiulcer effect. This potential can help cure patients with bacterial gastroenteritis.

CONCLUSION: Leaf and seed extract of M. oleifera has good antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiulcer, and antidiarrheal potential for the treatment of bacterial gastroenteritis.

A review of Leaves and Seeds Moringa oleifera Extract: The potential Moringa oleifera as Antibacterial, Anti-Inflammatory, Antidiarrhoeal, And Antiulcer Approaches To Bacterial Gastroenteritis

Climate change requires a transition to crops that need less water and are more tolerant of high temperatures. In this regard, the adaptation of Moringa oleifera to the Spanish Mediterranean Basin offers the sustainable alternative production of a plant with a high nutritional value. It might also serve as a substitute crop with significant economic potential in less developed tropical regions in the world. Moreover, to provide the market with a homogeneous product, the stabilization of the leaves is necessary. The lack of control in the traditional form of moringa leaf drying (which only makes use of shade and air) does not guarantee a final homogeneous water content that can extend the crop’s shelf life. Consequently, the purpose of this study was to develop a modular, affordable, and expandable dryer that enables the dehydration of leaves in the same field, lowering production costs in the process. The drying kinetics of leaves from crops of different ages (1 and 4 years) have been fitted to several mathematical models, using the “field dryer” and a semi-industrial tray dryer. In addition, their physicochemical properties were also compared. The outcomes demonstrate the viability of the field dryer’s design. The drying kinetics of both dryers were more effectively adapted to the logarithmic model. Due to the variable air conditions in the field, the equilibrium moisture level attained was somewhat greater using the field dryer than using the tray dryer, but the product color and antioxidant and protein contents were similar. Finally, younger plants produced leaves with greater antioxidant capacities and a lower final water content. 

Comparison and Modeling of the Drying Kinetics of Moringa Leaves Using a Closed Facility in the Field and Using a Convective Tray Dryer

Background Moringa oleifera extract (Lam) has many antioxidant and protective properties. Objective: to investigate the antioxidant activities of Lam in counteracting the high oxidative stress caused by acute sub-lethal aluminium phosphide (AlP) intoxication in rat heart. These activities will be detected by histopathological examination and some oxidative stress biomarkers. Methods a single sub-lethal dose of Alp (2 mg/kg body weight) was administered orally, and Lam was given orally at a dose (100 mg/kg body weight) one hour after receiving AlP to rats. Results aluminium phosphide caused significant cardiac histopathological changes with a significant increase in malondialdehyde (MDA); lipid peroxidation marker; and a significant depletion of antioxidant enzymes (catalase and glutathione reductase). However, treatment with Lam protected efficiently the cardiac tissue of intoxicated rats by increasing antioxidants levels with slight decreasing in MDA production compared to untreated group. Conclusions This study suggested that Moringa oleifera extract could possibly restore the altered cardiac histopathology and some antioxidant power in AlP intoxicated rats, and it could even be used as adjuvant therapy against AlP-induced cardiotoxicity.
