The AXO4 monazite-type compounds form an extended family that is described in this review in terms of field of stability versus composition. All the substitution possibilities on the cationic and anionic sites leading to the monazite structure are reported. The phosphate, vanadate, chromate, arseniate, sulphate and silicate families are described and the unit-cell parameters of pure compounds and solid solutions are gathered. The stability limits of the monazite-type structure are discussed versus several models generally correlated with geometric criteria. The effects of physico-chemical parameters such as pressure, temperature and irradiation on the monazite-type structure stability are also discussed. The structural relationships between the monazite structure and the related structures (zircon, anhydrite, barite, AgMnO4, scheelite and monoclinic BiPO4, CaSeO3, rhabdophane and SrNp(PO4)2) are described.

Crystal chemistry of the monazite structure

A new nanocomposite adsorbent La-201 of extremely high capacity and specific affinity toward phosphate was fabricated and well characterized, where hydrated La(III) oxide (HLO) nanoclusters were immobilized inside the networking pores of the polystyrene anion exchanger D-201. La-201 exhibited enhanced phosphate adsorption in the presence of competing anions (chloride, sulfate, nitrate, bicarbonate, and silicate) at greater levels (up to molar ratio of 20), with working capacity 2-4 times higher than a commercial Fe(III) oxide-based nanocomposite HFO-201 in batch runs. Column adsorption runs by using La-201 could effectively treat ∼6500 bed volumes (BV) of a synthetic feeding solution before breakthrough occurred (from 2.5 mg P/L in influent to <0.5 mg P/L in effluent), approximately 11 times higher magnitude than that of HFO-201. The exhausted La-201 could be regenerated with NaOH-NaCl binary solution at 60 °C for repeated use without any significant capacity loss. The underlying mechanism for the specific sorption of phosphate by La-201 was revealed with the aid of STEM-EDS, XPS, XRD, and SSNMR analysis, and the formation of LaPO4·xH2O is verified to be the dominant pathway for selective phosphate adsorption by the immobilized nano-HLO. The results indicated that La-201 was very promising in highly efficient removal of phosphate from contaminated waters.

Enhanced Phosphate Removal by Nanosized Hydrated La(III) Oxide Confined in Cross-linked Polystyrene Networks

Lanthanide phosphate nanocrystals exhibiting the rhabdophane-type structure and mean particle sizes below 10 nm are synthesized by hydrolysis of an aqueous mixture of sodium tripolyphosphate (Na5P3O10) and lanthanide salts. 31P NMR studies show that polyphosphate groups act both as a source of orthophosphate and as complexing agents to, respectively, crystallize and stabilize LnPO4·xH2O (x ≈ 0.7) nanoparticles. In the ternary system (Ln = La, Ce, and Tb), polyphosphate-capped particles form well-dispersed and highly luminescent aqueous colloids which are promising for applications in light-emitting devices.

Colloidal Synthesis of Luminescent Rhabdophane LaPO4:Ln3+·xH2O (Ln = Ce, Tb, Eu; x ≈ 0.7) Nanocrystals

Phosphate (Pi) sequestration by a lanthanum (La) exchanged clay mineral (La-Bentonite), which is extensively used in chemical lake restoration, was investigated on the molecular level using a combination of 31P and 139La solid state NMR spectroscopy (SSNMR), extended X-ray absorption spectroscopy (EXAFS), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and sorption studies. 31P SSNMR show that all Pi was immobilized as rhabdophane (LaPO4·n H2O, n ≤ 3), which was further supported by 139La SSNMR and EXAFS. However, PXRD results were ambiguous with respect to rhabdophane and monazite (LaPO4). Adsorption studies showed that at dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration above ca. 250 μM the binding capacity was only 50% of the theoretical value or even less. No other La or Pi phases were detected by SSNMR and EXAFS indicating the effect of DOC is kinetic. Moreover, 31P SSNMR showed that rhabdophane formed upon Pi sequestration is in close proximity to the clay matrix.

Plasmids are extra-chromosomal genetic elements that encode a wide variety of phenotypes and can be maintained in bacterial populations through vertical and horizontal transmission, thus increasing bacterial adaptation to hostile environmental conditions like those imposed by antimicrobial substances. To circumvent the segregational instability resulting from randomly distributing plasmids between daughter cells upon division, non-transmissible plasmids tend to be carried in multiple copies per cell, with the added benefit of exhibiting increased gene dosage. But carrying multiple copies also results in a high metabolic burden to the bacterial host, therefore reducing the overall fitness of the population. This trade-off poses an existential question for plasmids: What is the optimal plasmid copy number? In this manuscript, we address this question using a combination of population genetics modeling with microbiology experiments consisting of Escherichia coli K12 bearing a multi-copy plasmid encoding for blaTEM-1, a gene conferring resistance to β-lactam antibiotics. We postulate and analyze a Wright-Fisher model to evaluate the interaction between selective pressure, the number of plasmid copies carried by each cell, and the energetic cost associated with plasmid bearing. By numerically determining the optimal plasmid copy number for constant and fluctuating selection regimes, we show that the stability of multi-copy plasmids is maximized at intermediate plasmid copy numbers. We conclude by arguing that plasmid copy number is a highly optimized evolutionary trait that depends on the rate of environmental fluctuation and balances the benefit between increased stability in the absence of selection with the burden associated with carrying multiple copies of the plasmid.
