Many issues have arisen for the electricity sector because of the widespread use of gadgets that rely on electrical power. India's energy demands are rising rapidly due to the country's rapid economic development. These days, almost every industry makes extensive use of electrical machinery and equipment. Electronic gadgets add a non-linear demand to the power grid, which can cause power quality (PQ) problems such as voltage fluctuations that can damage electrical equipment and even knock the grid down. As the use of DG units becomes more commonplace, complications related to power conversion interfaces, load switching, and other factors emerge as potential bottlenecks in service. Power filters were first created several decades ago to address problems with PQ and to dampen harmonics caused by nonlinear loads. This document summarises previous studies that have investigated the effectiveness of power filters and other techniques for enhancing power quality. There are also descriptions of research that is still going on and where it stands, as well as a look ahead to what its possible future benefits might be.

A review on techniques for improving power quality: research gaps and emerging trends

One of the most important concerns in power system networks is harmonics, which is mainly developed with the huge usage of nonlinear loads and power electronic equipment. This harmonics leads to damage in the distribution system. This paper proposes an efficient hybrid approach with SHAPF for harmonic mitigation to maintain the PQ in the distribution system. An efficient hybrid approach is the joined execution of an EGOA and ANN named as EGOANN. The main aim of the proposed strategy is to improve the quality of power by mitigating the harmonics subject to the minimum THD. In the proposed approach, EGOA optimizes the dataset of fundamental and harmonic loop parameters such as Terminal voltage and DC voltage present in the SHAPF based on the load change and parameter variation of the system. In light of the accomplished dataset, ANN accurately predicts the parameters and produces optimized control signals. Finally, the proposed model is executed in the MATLAB/Simulink working platform, also includes the simulation results of a few test cases to maintain the PQ, and illustrates the superior performance of the proposed design philosophy. The simulation result shows that the harmonic distortion can be reduced to an acceptable level in response to the load change or parameter variation of the power system by the proposed EGOANN hybrid technique. Also, the proposed technique is more effective with less computation and reduces the complexity of the algorithm.

Optimal controller for mitigation of harmonics in hybrid shunt active power filter connected distribution system: An EGOANN technique

This paper deals with the design, simulation, and implementation of shunt hybrid compensator to maintain the power quality in three-phase distribution networks feeding different types balanced and unbalanced nonlinear loads. The configuration of the compensator consists of a selective harmonic elimination passive filter, a series-connected conventional six-pulse IGBT inverter, acting as the active filter terminated with a DC link capacitor. The theory and modelling of the compensator based on current harmonic components at the load end and their decomposition in d-q axis frame of reference are utilized in the reference current generation algorithm. Accordingly, the source current waveform is made to follow the reference current waveform using a high-frequency, carrier-based controller. Further, this inner current control loop is supported by a slower outer voltage control loop for sustaining desirable DC link voltage. Performance of the compensator is evaluated through MATLAB simulation covering different types of loads and reduction of harmonic currents and THD at the supply side along with excellent regulation of DC link voltage are confirmed. The performance of a hybrid compensator designed and fabricated using the above principles is evaluated and corroborated with the simulation results.

Design, Simulation and Hardware Implementation of Shunt Hybrid Compensator Using Synchronous Rotating Reference Frame (SRRF)-Based Control Technique

Wind turbines can operate at fixed or variable speeds. The manner in which the rotational speed of a wind turbine is controlled is an important consideration. The power output of a wind turbine can be controlled with the involvement of two mechanisms, active stall and passive stall, and six major control methods (yaw control, active pitch regulation, etc.). A fuzzy model was used to describe a wind turbine whose output is controlled by changing the blades’ angle of attack and rotating the nacelle to a position facing the wind. The input parameters in the developed control model were: wind speed, power demand. The output parameters were: angle of attack, nacelle yaw from the wind direction and generated power. The values of input and output parameters were described in fuzzy terms, and the rules of a fuzzy system were developed. The model was described in the LabView environment, and it was tested with the use of various defuzzification methods. The results of LabView simulations revealed that a model for controlling the power output of a wind turbine was successfully developed based on fuzzy logic. The control model responded appropriately to changes in the values of input parameters. An increase in power generation was observed when the angle of attack was increased to a given threshold value under stable weather conditions. Power generation decreased when that threshold value was exceeded. The developed wind turbine model can be used to predict the electric power output of a wind turbine under various weather conditions.

Fuzzy Model of Wind Turbine Control

The lack of statistical foundations among other shortcomings of existing methods of measuring efficiency necessitated the development of a new method called, Systems Coefficient of Performance Methodology (SCOPM). One key feature of SCOP methodology is the use of fuzzy logic to express complex efficiency measurement parameters into linguistic variables understandable by non experts and the general public. In this research note, the procedure for development of membership functions for the fuzzy logic aspect of SCOPM modeling was standardized and presented. A thorough analysis of fuzzy logic modeling which is at the heart of SCOPM was done. Real life examples and case studies are used to highlight the practical applications and utility of the methodology. The study gives a deep insight into the strengths of SCOP as an efficiency measurement method and its superiority over other efficiency measurement methods like, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA), etc. Finally, a guide to practitioners on implementation of SCOPM as well as future research direction for academics and researchers is presented.

Notes on procedure for the development of fuzzy rules in SCOP methodology

This paper deals with design and simulation of a three-phase shunt hybrid power filter consisting of a pair of 5th and 7th selective harmonic elimination passive power filters connected in series with a conventional active power filter with reduced kVA rating. The objective is to enhance the power quality in a distribution network feeding variety of non-linear, time-varying and unbalanced loads. The theory and modelling of the entire power circuit in terms of synchronously rotating reference frame and leading to a non-linear control scheme is presented. This work involves introduction of individual fuzzy logic controllers for d and q axis current control and for voltage regulation of the DC link capacitor. The simulation schematic covering the power and control circuits have been developed taking into account severe harmonic distortion caused by non-linear and unbalanced loads. The effectiveness of the fuzzy logic controller for the compensation of harmonics and reactive power has been verified by successive simulation runs and analysis of the results. The proposed controller is also able to compensate the distortion generated by the voltage- and current-fed non-linear loads, unbalanced and dynamically varying loads. Further, excellent regulation of the DC link voltage is accomplished, which significantly contributes to improvement of power quality.
