A holistic approach for melanoidin removal via Fe-impregnated activated carbon prepared from Mangifera indica leaves biomass

Cr(VI) removal was investigated under batch and continuous mode using dry Litchi chinensis as the low-cost sorbent. Batch biosorption experiments displayed a maximum Cr(VI) removal of 99% with litchi peels, suggesting that the litchi peels can be utilized as a prime sorbent for removal of Cr(VI). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) profiles confirmed the occurrence of ─NH, ─CH, ─CH3, ─CH2, and C═O functional groups in the litchi peels for the biosorption of Cr(VI). Cr(VI) sorption thermodynamics by litchi peels indicated that the reaction is endothermic and spontaneous in nature. The effect of various co-ions on Cr(VI) biosorption in the batch experiments revealed a significant effect due to Fe2+(p=0.021) and PO43− (p=0.043) ions on biosorption of Cr(VI). Waste Litchi Peels for Cr(VI) Removal from Synthetic Wastewater in Batch and Continuous Systems: Sorbent Characterization, Regeneration and Reuse Study

Abstract Distillery industry is amidst the top source of surface water pollution owing to its very high content of recalcitrant organics, inorganics, and persistent turbidity contents. Melanoidins are the chief dark brown-colored complex contaminant existing in the distillery generated effluent with a very high organic load. The present investigation examined the melanoidin elimination from a model wastewater system utilizing Cu-impregnated activated carbon derived from waste leaves of Mangifera indica . With the initial surface characterization utilizing SEM equipped with EDX and FTIR, the Box-Behnken design of experiments was engaged for determining the influence of different factors for the melanoidin removal from the aqueous system. Adsorbent dose, initial melanoidin concentration, and contact time have imposed the maximum effect on to the melanoidin removal (73%) using the synthesized activated carbon, clearly showing its ability for the melanoidin removal from the aqueous contaminated system.

A parametric study using Box-Behnken design for melanoidin removal via Cu-impregnated activated carbon prepared from waste leaves biomass

Biosorption of copper, chromium, lead and cadmium in an up-flow packed-bed bioreactor with biosorbents [sanitary sewage sludge (SS), powdered coconut shell (PCS)] was conducted in a search for solutions to the environmental problem caused by heavy metals. Analysis of the results, demonstrated that the adsorbent had an extraordinary capacity for biosorption of the heavy metals, with a removal percentage of over 90% almost for all metals. The mechanism of the process was evaluated by FT-IR analysis and the functional groups employed in the process were determined. The presence of RNO2 peak at 1,421 cm–1 for unloaded sanitary SS and the presence of C-H group of aromatic ring for unloaded PCS play a major role in adsorption process. In regeneration experiments, increase in sorption performance was observed during cycles of sorption-desorption indicates a maximum adsorption during the onset of the process. Kinetic models (Adams-Bohart model, Yoon and Nelson equation and Thomas model) analysed for the continuous packed-bed biosorption systems are used to determine the biosorption capacity, breakthrough curve of biosorbent and to design of treatment processes.
