The detrimental impact of corrosion on metallic materials remains a pressing concern across industries. Recently, intelligent anti-corrosive coatings for safeguarding metal infrastructures have garnered significant interest. These coatings are equipped with micro/nano carriers that store corrosion inhibitors and release them when triggered by external stimuli. These advanced coatings have the capability to elevate the electrochemical impedance values of steel by 2-3 orders of magnitude compared to the blank coating. However, achieving intelligent, durable, and reliable anti-corrosive coatings requires careful consideration in the design of these micro/nano carriers. This review paper primarily focuses on investigating the corrosion inhibition mechanism of various nano/micro carriers/barriers and identifying the challenges associated with using them for achieving desired properties in anti-corrosive coatings. Furthermore, the fundamental aspects required for nano/micro carriers, including compatibility with the coating matrix, high specific surface area, stability in different environments, stimuli-responsive behavior, and facile synthesis were investigated. To achieve this aim, we explored the properties of micro/nanocarriers based on oxide nanoparticles, carbonaceous and two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials. Finally, we reviewed recent literature on the application of state-of the art nanocarriers based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent-organic frameworks (COFs). We believe that the outcomes of this review paper offer valuable insights for researchers in selecting appropriate materials that can effectively enhance the corrosion resistance of coatings. 

Advanced materials for smart protective coatings: Unleashing the potential of metal/covalent organic frameworks, 2D nanomaterials and carbonaceous structures

Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, with extraordinary physical and chemical characteristics, have long been regarded as a promising nanofiller in organic coatings for marine corrosion protection. The past decade has witnessed the high-speed progress of 2D nanomaterials reinforced organic composite coatings, and plenty of breakthroughs have been achieved as yet. This review covers an in-depth and all-around outline of the up-to-date advances in 2D nanomaterials modified organic coatings employed for marine corrosion protection realm. Starting from a brief introduction of 2D nanomaterials, with the preparation strategies and properties is illustrated. Subsequently, diverse protection models based on composite coatings for marine corrosion protection are also introduced, including physical barrier, self-healing, as well as cathodic protection, respectively. Furthermore, computational simulations and critical factors on the corrosion protection properties of composite coatings are clarified in detail. Finally, the remaining challenges and prospects for marine corrosion protection based on 2D nanomaterials reinforced organic coatings are highlighted. This article is protected by copyright. Two-dimensional Nanomaterials Reinforced Organic Coatings for Marine Corrosion Protection: State of the Art, Challenges, and Future Prospectives.

Advance of design and application in self-healing anticorrosive coating: a review

In the marine environment, besides external damage and internal defects, ultraviolet (UV) radiation is also a pivotal factor affecting the stable properties of coatings. Improving the anti-UV aging and active protection properties is beneficial to prolong the service life of coatings. Herein, the PDA-GO-CeO2 composite material is obtained through a facile stepwise growth of polydopamine (PDA) and CeO2 on GO nanosheets and further preparing a multifunctional anti-corrosion PDA-GO-CeO2-EP coating. As expected, composite coating displays strong adhesion force (6.9 MPa) and tensile strength (21.1 MPa), profiting from the enhanced crosslinking density and interface structure caused by PDA-GO-CeO2 and resin matrix interaction. Since low defect functionalized PDA-GO-CeO2 constructs the reinforced physical barrier, the anti-corrosion ability of PDA-GO-CeO2-EP coating (109.7 Ω·cm2) is more dependable than those of EP (106.7 Ω·cm2), GO-EP coating (108.8 Ω·cm2) and PDA-GO-EP (109.1 Ω·cm2) coatings after immersing in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution for 100 d. Thanks to the synergistic effect of PDA/CeO2, the active protection performance of PDA-GO-CeO2-EP coating is endowed, which is further proved through the in situ scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET). Following the UV aging treatment, PDA-GO-CeO2-EP coating shows minor gloss loss (20.4 %) and better adhesion force (4.3 MPa). Furthermore, the resistance value of PDA-GO-CeO2-EP coating is 7.03 × 106 Ω cm2 after 30 d immersion in saline solution, which is 242 times greater than that of EP coating (2.90 × 104 Ω cm2). This dependable performance of PDA-GO-CeO2-EP coating comes from the reflection, refraction, and absorption of UV rays by nanoscale CeO2 particles. Consequently, this work offers a simple and promising strategy for fabricating multifunctional long-term protection coatings, thus hopefully extending the service life of marine engineering equipment. 

Active/passive protection and anti-UV waterborne epoxy coatings based on low defect functionalized PDA-GO-CeO2 material for excellent corrosion control

Currently, the demand for environmentally friendly corrosion inhibitors for marine environment is on the increase due to government regulations to phase out toxic ones. A new insight into room temperature incorporation of organic and inorganic materials to form an environmentally benign Ce-based metal organic framework (Ce-MOF) for corrosion inhibition of copper alloys in chloride rich environment becomes imperative. Ce-MOF contains O and N heteroatoms which can easily form compact-uniform layer on metallic surface to prevent corrosion attack. The inhibition potential of Ce-MOF was thus examined via combined electrochemical method, density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The overall results revealed a strong protection of copper in the presence of the formulated Ce-MOF compared to its absence. 

Insight into the corrosion inhibition of Ce-MOF on copper in aqueous chloride environment: From experimental validation to molecular-level prediction

For the first time, organic tannic acid (TA) molecules and then inorganic praseodymium (Pr) cations as corrosion inhibitors were successfully loaded into a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF8)-type porous coordination polymer (PCP) decorated on molybdenum disulfide, MoS2, (MS)-based transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) to create novel hybrid mesoporous Pr/TA-ZIF8@MS nanoreservoirs. Thereafter, the hybrid nanoreservoirs were embedded into the epoxy matrix for the preparation of smart pH-triggered nanocoatings. Characterizations of the Pr/TA-ZIF8@MS nanoreservoirs via Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric (TG), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM)/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) experiments confirmed the fabrication of mesoporous structures comprising Pr/TA interfacial interactions with ZIF8-decorated MS nanoplatelets possessing high thermal stability and compact/dense configuration features with a framework reorientation. A remarkable smart release of the inhibited cations (Pr3+ and Zn2+) in the presence of inbuilt TA at both acidic and alkaline media was achieved under inductively coupled plasma (ICP) examination. The superior pH-triggered self-healing inhibition through the smart controlled-release of Pr, tannate, Zn, and imidazole inhibited species/complexes from EP/Pr-TA-ZIF8@MS via ligand exchange was obtained from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) assessments of the scratched coatings during 72 h of saline immersion. In addition, the long-term barrier-induced corrosion prevention (log |Z|10 mHz = 10.49 Ω·cm2 after 63 days) of the EP/Pr-TA-ZIF8@MS was actualized. Moreover, efficient increments of the coating cross-link density (56.45%), tensile strength (63.6%), and toughness value (56.5%) compared to the Neat epoxy coating revealed noticeable thermomechanical properties of the EP/Pr-TA-ZIF8@MS.
