We show that percolation concepts lead to the definition of a characteristic length for the permeability in random porous media. Application of the model to sandstone and carbonate rocks yields quantitative agreement between theory and experiment with no adjustable parameters.

We show that mercury injection can be used to characterize the portions of rock pore space that dominate both the electrical conductivity and the absolute permeability. The resulting new expression for the conductivity formation factor is fundamentally different from the classical Archie's law but will appear similar to it in some circumstances. The predictions of our theory for both conductivity and permeability agree with the experimental measurements within expected errors. The results indicate that the absolute permeability and the conductivity formation factor can be predicted from mercury injection measurements with no adjustable parameters.

Prediction of rock electrical conductivity from mercury injection measurements

This monograph describes recent progress in modelling the transport properties of sedimentary rock. Statistical descriptions are applied to the pore-space geometry and to the transport processes involving pore fluids. Fractals are used to quantify the pore geometry at length scales shorter than grain size. Percolation theory is applied to fluid flow. The permeability can be expressed in terms of a single effective pore diameter measured from mercury injection capillary pressure. This permeability relation is valid for essentially all porous rock and for a broad class of porous media. Mercury injection provides a powerful caliper of the geometry of a percolation cluster in a pore-space and supplies new information about pore space correlations and dynamics of fluid displacements.
