Aim: The current clinical practice of endodontics involves utilization of a variety of new technological ad- vances and materials Technologies available for use in endodontic offices today include battery or electric motors using NiTi rotary file systems, new generation of electronic apex locators (EALs), improved digital radiographic sensors, surgi- cal microscopes, and ultrasonic units The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and use of newer technolo- gies among Iranian dental practitioners Materials and methods: The population under study included the dental practitioners participating in the 49th and 50th Congress of Dentistry, who were selected with a simple sampling method Data was collected by questionnaires which were completed by the participants in an anonymous manner The contingency table and chi-squared test were used for data analysis by SPSS 135 software Results: A total of 700 dental practitioners participated in the study; NiTi rotary systems were used by 501%; electronic apex locators were often employed by 463%; 217% reported that ultrasonic units were often used Only 11% frequently used surgical microscopes Males and females differed with respect to the use of newer technologies (P<005) Conclusion: Based on the results of the present study, it seems necessary for dentists to take part in continuing dental edu- cation programs related to the newer technologies to improve their knowledge and practice

The Use of Instruments by Iranian Endodontics and General Practioners

Background: In today's world of digital dentistry, dental photography plays an important role as multilevel significance and represents the synonym of contemporary dentistry. Thus, we aimed at evaluating the acquaintance of practice, opportunity and morals of dental photography in everyday practice among undergraduate dental students. Design and Methods: The current research was an observational cross-sectional study. Total 233 students participated; each was given questionnaire consisted of three parts covering the following aspects: questions 1 to 3 on the practice of dental photography, questions 4 to 7 on morals in dental photography and question 8 to 11 on opportunities of dental photography. The answers were tabulated and statistically analysed and association with the factors were tested for significance using Chi-square tests, and P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The total response rate was 86%. Among the 201 respondents, 100 were males and 101 females; 96% male students were taking photographs and 93% females were taking photographs, on regular basis. Phone cameras (41.3%) were the most commonly used device followed by DSLR cameras. Surveyed students mentioned patient education (53.2%) as most needed requirement for taking photographs, followed by treatment planning (49.8%) and monitoring of the treatment outcome (34.3%). Ninety-one percent of students feel that there is an opportunity for advancement in dental photography techniques. Conclusions: The participants aware of dental photography, but they require detail insight on proper capturing of photographs and morals, with regards to confidentiality of the patient and patient consent.

A cross-sectional survey to evaluate acquaintance about dental photography among dental students in daily clinical practice

Purpose: The aim of the study is to determine the extent of the use of photography by dentists for the needs of everyday practice. Material and methods: The survey was conducted among 254 dentists practicing in Sofia, 64 (25.2%) - men and 190 (74.8%) - women. The average age of respondents is 43.21 years. Questionnaire was developed, consisting of 9 questions, divided into two parts. The first part covers questions about the nature of the dental practice of respondent doctor. The second part includes questions about the use of photography for the purpose of daily practice. Results: Astatistical data processing is made. The average values of the responses received by groups of questions are analyzed. The factors that affect the use of dental photography were defined. The results show that from all of the surveyed persons, 82 (32.28%) people use photography for dental practice and 172 (67.72%) dentists do not to apply this method in their daily work. It was found that the reasons for not using the photography by dentists are: fear of cross-infection - 4 persons (1.57%); lack of need to use photography - 14 persons (5.51%); lack of interest - 18 persons (7.09%); cost of clinical time - 24 persons (9.45%); additional training - 58 (22.83%); expensive investment - 98 persons (38.58%). Conclusion: The extent and reasons for use of photography for the dental practice were found. The factors that are relevant to the use of dental photography by dentists were investigated.

Application of photography in dental practice

Objective The purpose of study is to find the prevalence of usage of different advanced endodontic instruments and techniques in pediatric dentistry. Materials and methods A self-administered, structured questionnaire written in English validated through a pretested survey was randomly mailed to the postgraduate students in different dental colleges. A total of 182 of the complete filled questionnaires were returned with response rate of 68.2%. The data were analyzed using the SPSS version 15.0. The Student's t-test and ANOVA test were used as test of significance. Karl Pearson's correlation test was used to assess years of education and usage of endodontic instruments. Results There was a limited use of new endodontic technologies in the present study. The highest positive response to the usage of advanced endodontic instruments was related to NiTi rotary files with highest number seen among 3rd year students. A linear relationship was found between years of postgraduation and usage of advanced endodontic instruments using Karl Pearson's correlation coefficient. Clinical significance Based on the results of the present study, it seems that the usage of advanced endodontic instruments is not up to the level. Also we found increased use of new technologies with years of postgraduation.

Aims To investigate the influence of the system used for digital photography upon the aesthetic analysis in dental medicine.Materials and methods The aesthetic parameters were evaluated on photographs taken with different systems: two DSLR camera set-ups (DSLR + ring flash and DSLR + twin flash) and a smartphone-based system using a five-point Likert scale questionnaire.Results Generally, the DSLR camera + twin flash photographic method performed the best with an overall average score of 4.3, receiving the highest scores for eight statements included in the questionnaire, followed by the smartphone-based system with an average score of 4.04 (the highest values for three statements) and DSLR camera + ring flash with an average score of 3.92 (the highest values for four statements). The scores recorded for the images taken with the DSLR camera + twin flash, DSLR camera + ring flash and smartphone-based system were significantly different for each statement (p <0.05).Conclusions When analysing the characteristics of the dental arches and of individual teeth, images taken with the DSLR camera and twin flash photographic method received the best evaluation, while for the examination of the dentofacial relations and the gingival characteristics, the images obtained with the DSLR camera and ring flash setting, respectively, with the smartphone-based system were considered optimal.

Evaluation of smartphone dental photography in aesthetic analysis.

This study assesses, by means of a postal questionnaire, the numbers of general dental practitioners who use clinical photography, and the uses to which this is applied. The questionnaire was distributed to 1000 randomly selected GDPs in Great Britain. A response rate of 76% was achieved. Of the respondents, 36% used clinical photography, with 65% of those using an intra-oral 35 mm camera, 18% a digital camera and 12% an intra-oral digital video camera. Principal uses of clinical photography were patient instruction/motivation (72%), medico-legal reasons (68%), treatment planning (63%), and liaison with laboratory (43%).
