This article presents an overview of the developments in stainless steels made since the 1990s. Some of the new applications that involve the use of stainless steel are also introduced. A brief introduction to the various classes of stainless steels, their precipitate phases and the status quo of their production around the globe is given first. The advances in a variety of subject areas that have been made recently will then be presented. These recent advances include (1) new findings on the various precipitate phases (the new J phase, new orientation relationships, new phase diagram for the Fe–Cr system, etc.); (2) new suggestions for the prevention/mitigation of the different problems and new methods for their detection/measurement and (3) new techniques for surface/bulk property enhancement (such as laser shot peening, grain boundary engineering and grain refinement). Recent developments in topics like phase prediction, stacking fault energy, superplasticity, metadynamic recrystallisation and the calculation of mechanical properties are introduced, too. In the end of this article, several new applications that involve the use of stainless steels are presented. Some of these are the use of austenitic stainless steels for signature authentication (magnetic recording), the utilisation of the cryogenic magnetic transition of the sigma phase for hot spot detection (the Sigmaplugs), the new Pt-enhanced radiopaque stainless steel (PERSS) coronary stents and stainless steel stents that may be used for magnetic drug targeting. Besides recent developments in conventional stainless steels, those in the high-nitrogen, low-Ni (or Ni-free) varieties are also introduced. These recent developments include new methods for attaining very high nitrogen contents, new guidelines for alloy design, the merits/demerits associated with high nitrogen contents, etc.

Recent developments in stainless steels

In an attempt to bridge the gap between atomistic and continuum plasticity simulations of hydrogen in iron, we present three dimensional discrete dislocation plasticity simulations incorporating the hydrogen elastic stress and a hydrogen dependent dislocation mobility law. The hydrogen induced stress is incorporated following the formulation derived by Gu and El-Awady (2018) which here we extend to a finite boundary value problem, a microcantilever beam, via the superposition principle. The hydrogen dependent mobility law is based on first principle calculations by Katzarov et al. (2017) and was found to promote dislocation generation and enhance slip planarity at a bulk hydrogen concentration of 0.1 appm; which is typical for bcc materials. The hydrogen elastic stress produced the same behaviour, but only when the bulk concentration was extremely high. In a microcantilever, hydrogen was found to promote dislocation activity which lowered the flow stress and generated more pronounced slip steps on the free surfaces. These observations are consistent with the hydrogen enhanced localized plasticity (HELP) mechanism, and it is concluded that both the hydrogen elastic stress and hydrogen increased dislocation mobility are viable explanations for HELP. However it is the latter that dominates at the low concentrations typically found in bcc metals.

Strain field of interstitial hydrogen atom in body-centered cubic iron and its effect on hydrogen–dislocation interaction

The total structural energy per primitive lattice cell, density of electron states, spatial distribution of electrons and elastic modulus in fcc Fe–H solid solutions are studied using the density functional theory and Wien2k program package. It is shown that hydrogen increases the density of electron states at the Fermi level. The density of conduction electrons is increased in the vicinity of hydrogen atoms, which suggests that the latter migrate over the crystal lattice surrounded by the clouds of conduction electrons. Calculations of elastic modulus show that hydrogen decreases the shear modulus c44. The consequences for mechanical properties of hydrogen-charged austenitic steels are analysed taking into account the stress for activation of dislocation sources, the line tension of dislocations and the distance between dislocations in pile-ups. It is concluded that hydrogen-induced brittleness of austenitic steels can be satisfactorily interpreted in terms of the hydrogen effect on the electronic structure.
