Anxiety and depression in breast cancer patients before and after participation in a cancer support group.

This study aimed to identify the current concerns and needs of Australian women who had recently completed primary treatment for breast cancer in order to develop a workbook-journal for this population. Focus groups were utilized to allow women to use their own frames of reference, and to identify and verbalize the topics that were important to them following treatment. All focus groups were conducted in a patient education and relaxation room, familiar to the women to assist them to feel more at ease. Ten women aged 36-68 years who had recently completed treatment for early-stage breast cancer at a South Australian public hospital took part in one of three focus groups. Topics covered included current physical, emotional and social needs. Participants reported a sense of apprehension about the future at the completion of primary treatment. In addition to this, five specific areas of concern were identified including physical sequelae of treatment, intimacy issues, fear of recurrence, benefit finding, and optimism versus pessimism about the future. Means of addressing post-treatment concerns were also discussed. Following the presentation of these findings, suggestions to aid health-care professionals in their clinical practice are provided.

‘I’m living with a chronic illness, not . . . dying with cancer': a qualitative study of Australian women's self-identified concerns and needs following primary treatment for breast cancer

The aim was to synthesise patients' and relatives' experiences of participating in a psychosocial intervention related to having cancer. The study was a meta-synthesis inspired by Noblit & Hare's 'meta-ethnography' approach. We systematically searched six databases and included 33 studies in the meta-synthesis. Inclusion criteria were qualitative studies with relevance to the synthesis topic. The meta-synthesis conceptualised the way in which participants develop their way of living with cancer, and the role psychosocial interventions play in helping them to live through the illness. Five themes symbolising the participants' core experiences were identified: (1) Emotional relief and a sense of well-being, (2) normalisation of experiences and a sense of control, (3) shared experience and a sense of community, (4) a safe place and (5) transformation and adaptability. The findings indicated that psychosocial interventions were used to try to deal with the changes in the human conditions caused by cancer. Sharing their experiences and forming social relationships helped the participants adapt to cancer. An existential perspective may provide a nuanced understanding of patients' and relatives' experiences of participating in psychosocial interventions.

Dealing with cancer: a meta-synthesis of patients' and relatives' experiences of participating in psychosocial interventions

In an attempt to overcome the potential invalidity of response shift present in pre-test versus post-test designs, 197 breast cancer patients completed self-reports about their current anxiety and depression states about 2 years after diagnosis, and also for how they felt at the time of their diagnosis. Current and previous states of anxiety and depression, item analyses and factor analyses of these results, plus MANOVA across all items to test for changes over time (termed 'actual change' in the literature) were conducted. In addition, the combined anxiety and depression scores were analysed as a single unit to determine overlap of symptomatology and suggest possible treatments. As well as showing decreases in the proportion of participants who were experiencing clinically significant anxiety and depression from the time of diagnosis to the time of the survey, results indicated changes in the underlying anxiety symptomatology experienced by participants, moving from somatic complaints of fatigue to feelings of loss of control and inability to cope. The predominant symptomatology of depression remained consistently related to an inability to cope or make decisions, feelings of helplessness and loss. Suggestions for helping clinicians to deal with patients' symptomatology are discussed.

'How I was then and how I am now': current and retrospective self-reports of anxiety and depression in Australian women with breast cancer.

Heterogeneity and treatment landscape of ovarian carcinoma

Autologous bone marrow transplantation (AuBMT) is probably among the most aggressive of physical treatments endured by cancer patients. High-risk breast cancer patients who choose this therapy face prolonged, agonizing and life-threatening interventions that are no less arduous than confronting the malignant disease itself. The study, which aimed to broadening our understanding of the psychosocial impact and the implications of AuBMT, presents a protocol analysis of group support intervention in 45 recipients (eight to ten women in five groups). The sessions were held at the Transplant Department at the Chaim Sheba Medical Center. The contribution of group support to the healing process was examined.



The findings show that recovery was affected by a wide range of psychosocial factors, specifically highlighting the impact of transplantation and survival on five domains, viz. physical, psychological/emotional, vocational, social and family/spousal intimacy. Illness and treatment management is also discussed. The support generated by the group, both individually and collectively, was found to contribute significantly to the spectrum of resources available to the participants.
