A 3 GHz Side Coupled linac (ACLIP) has been designed to accelerate the proton energy of a 30 MeV commercial cyclotron up to 240 MeV, needed for deep protontherapy (PT). The first module of the linac, able to accelerate proton from 30 to 35 MeV has been constructed and is now on the way to being brazed. An agreement has been set up with e2v (Chelmsford, UK) in order to carry out high power testing with a 4 MW magnetron/modulator. Acceleration tests will then be performed at LNS-Catania using the 30 MeV proton beam from the Superconducting Cyclotron. The second module, which is currently under construction, will be placed downstream from the first one and driven by a second e2v magnetron/modulator to investigate the magnetron phase locking possibilities.

The possibility of using magnetrons as the source of RF power, to reduce the overall cost of the machine, is one the more relevant features of this project and this investigation is carried out within the frame of a collaboration with e2v (Chelmsford, UK). ACLIP is formed by 5 modules coupled together. The first one (able to accelerate proton from 30 to 35 MeV) has been machined, completely brazed and in December 2008 full power RF tests were performed. In this paper we will review the main features of the linac and discuss the results of the RF measurements carried out on this prototype.

Design, construction and low power RF tests of the first module of the ACLIP linac

ACLIP is a 3 GHz proton SCL linac designed as a booster for a 30 MeV commercial cyclotron. The whole accelerator is a 5 module structure coupled together. The final energy is 62 MeV well suitable for the therapy of ocular tumors. In order to treat deep-seated tumors the energy can be raised up to 230 MeV by adding a second linac. The possibility of using magnetrons, as the source of RF power, to reduce the overall cost of the machine, and the tile design (covered by a patent), named Back-toBack Accelerating Cavity (BBAC), to efficiently accelerate protons starting from a low energy are two of the more relevant features of this project. The first module (from 30 to 35 MeV) has been full power RF tested in December 2008, showing that the design accelerating field could be easily reached. Then this module, along with all elements of the RF power setup, has been transferred to INFN-LNS in Catania at the end of April 2010 to carry out beam acceleration tests using a 30 MeV proton beam from the Superconducting Cyclotron. In this paper we will review the main features of the linac and discuss the results of the acceleration measurements carried out on this prototype.

A side coupled proton linac module 30-35 mev: first acceleration tests

Recent results in accelerator physics have shown the feasibility of a coupling scheme between a cyclotron and a linac for proton acceleration. Cyclotrons with energies up to 30 MeV, mainly devoted to radioisotopes production, are available in a large number of medical centres. These two evidences have suggested the idea to study and design a linac booster able to increase the initial proton energy up to the values required for the treatment of tumors, like the ocular ones. One of the main challenges in such a project is related to meet the requirement of having sufficient mean current for therapy from a given injection current coming from the cyclotron. In this paper we will review the rationale of the project in order to optimize the transmittance and to minimize the duty-cycle. In this frame we will discuss the basic design of a compact 3GHz linac, from 30 to 62 MeV, with a new approach to the cavities used in a SCL (Side Coupled Linac) structure (PALME project).

Study of the Dynamics in a Linac Booster for Proton Therapy in the 30-62 MeV Energy Range

Recent results in accelerator physics have shown the feasibility of a coupling scheme between a cyclotron and a linac for proton acceleration: a 60MeV proton beam has been successfully captured and accelerated by a prototype module (LIBO) of a 3GHz linac. While the number of 60MeV cyclotrons is limited, a large number of 30MeV ones, mainly devoted to radioisotopes production, is available in medical centres. These two evidences have suggested the idea to study and design a 30MeV linac post-accelerator able to bridge the gap between the 30MeV commercial cyclotrons and the 60MeV LIBO. The main challenge in such a research project is related to meet the requirements arising from the beam dynamics with the constrains due to the mechanical structures and tolerances and to the heat dissipation mechanism chosen in the design. In this paper we will review the rationale of the research project and we will discuss the basic design of a compact 3GHz linac with a new approach to the cavities used in a SCL (Side Coupled Linac) structure.
