Composite sheets and nanotubes of different morphologies containing carbon, boron, and nitrogen were grown in the electric arc discharge between graphite cathodes and amorphous boron-filled graphite anodes in a nitrogen atmosphere. Concentration profiles derived from electron energy-loss line spectra show that boron and nitrogen are correlated in a one-to-one ratio; core energy-loss fine structures reveal small differences compared to pure hexagonal boron nitride. Boron and carbon are anticorrelated, suggesting the substitution of boron and nitrogen into the carbon network. Results indicate that singlephaase CyBxNx as well as separated domains (nanosize) of boron nitride in carbon networks may exist.

Doping Graphitic and Carbon Nanotube Structures with Boron and Nitrogen

Systems and methods of forming refractory metal nitride layers using disilazanes

Two-dimensional (2D) atomic layers derived from bulk layered materials are very interesting from both scientific and application viewpoints, as evidenced from the story of graphene. Atomic layers of several such materials such as hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and dichalcogenides are examples that complement graphene. The observed unconventional properties of graphene has triggered interest in doping the hexagonal honeycomb lattice of graphene with atoms such as boron (B) and nitrogen (N) to obtain new layered structures. Individual atomic layers containing B, C, and N of various compositions conform to several stable phases in the three-component phase diagram of B-C-N. Additionally, stacking layers built from C and BN allows for the engineering of new van-der-Waals stacked materials with novel properties. In this paper, the synthesis, characterization, and properties of atomically thin layers, containing B, C, and N, as well as vertically assembled graphene/h-BN stacks are reviewed. The electrical, mechanical, and optical properties of graphene, h-BN, and their hybrid structure are also discussed along with the applications of such materials.

Binary and Ternary Atomic Layers Built from Carbon, Boron, and Nitrogen

New graphite-like materials of composition BC0.9-1.3N0.8-0.9H0.4-0.7 and BC3.0-3.2N0.8-1.0H0.2-2, which are described as BCN(H) and BC3N(H), have been prepared by the interaction of acetonitrile with boron trichloride in a hydrogen and nitrogen atmosphere and acrylonitrile with boron trichloride, respectively. X-ray and electron diffraction analyses indicate that these materials have hexagonal structures similar to that of graphite. ESCA spectra and the possible chemical bonds suggest that the ideal structure of BCN is made of the unit structure of BC2N + BN, while BC3N is composed of BC3N + BNC3. A BCN(H) plate has a basal-plane conductivity of 1.28 (Ω cm)-1 at room temperature, while a BC3N(H) plate has that of 88.5 (Ω cm)-1. Thermoelectric measurements indicate that both materials behave as p-type semiconductors and a BCN(H) plate has a high Seebeck coefficient of 300 μV/°K at room temperature in air.

Syntheses and structures of new graphite-like materials of composition BCN(H) and BC3N(H)

Photocatalytic hydrogen production from water is a promising strategy for the direct conversion of sunlight into chemical energy, which is considered as a long-term and sustainable solution to address worldwide energy and environmental issues. Herein, we develop carbon doped boron nitride (BCN) as metal-free photocatalysts by using solid-gas reaction and molecular design method of boron source. Four kinds of boron carbon nitride (BCN) were synthesized through mixed glucoses with melamine phosphate borate (MPB), melamine borate (MB), boric acid (BA) and boron oxide (BO), respectively. It can be found that the morphology of BCN-MPB (nanosheets) is different from bulk BCN-MB, bulk BCN-BA and bulk BCN-BO. The BCN-MPB nanosheets show much higher specific surface area, the longer lifetime of photoexcited charge carriers, and the stronger electron transport ability compared to those of bulk BCN. Thus, BCN-MPB nanosheets exhibit significantly improved photocatalytic hydrogen activities under visible light illumination compared to those of bulk BCN. Our work represents a facile and template-free synthesis strategy for the rational design of eco-friendly, stable and inexpensive photocatalysts, and paves new pathways for tuning their photoreactivity in sustainable light-to-energy conversion.

Template-free synthesis of carbon-doped boron nitride nanosheets for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

The physical properties of carbon‐boron nitride (C‐BN) prepared from mixtures of BCl3, NH3, and selected hydrocarbons by codeposition methods have been investigated using x‐ray diffraction, electron diffraction, transmission electron spectroscopy, x‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman scattering, optical reflectivity, thermal conductivity, thermopower, and electrical resistivity. Taken collectively, the results of these experiments indicate that the compression‐annealed C‐BN materials studied here consist of separated domains of pyrolytic boronated graphite and pyrolytic boron nitride, while as‐deposited samples may possibly be a single‐phase mixture of C, B, and N. As‐deposited materials containing more than 20% carbon were found to be more highly oriented than unannealed pyrolytic graphite, and the crystallinity of these materials was greatly enhanced by uniaxial compression annealing.
