We analyze how the characteristics of El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) are changed in coupled ocean–atmosphere simulations of the mid-Holocene (MH) and the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) performed as part of the Paleoclimate Modeling Intercomparison Project phase 2 (PMIP2). Comparison of the model results with present day observations show that most of the models reproduce the large scale features of the tropical Pacific like the SST gradient, the mean SST and the mean seasonal cycles. All models simulate the ENSO variability, although with different skill. Our analyses show that several relationships between El Nino amplitude and the mean state across the different control simulations are still valid for simulations of the MH and the LGM. Results for the MH show a consistent El Nino amplitude decrease. It can be related to the large scale atmospheric circulation changes. While the Northern Hemisphere receives more insolation during the summer time, the Asian summer monsoon system is strengthened which leads to the enhancement of the Walker circulation. Easterlies prevailing over the central eastern Pacific induce an equatorial upwelling that damps the El Nino development. Results are less conclusive for 21ka. Large scale dynamic competes with changes in local heat fluxes, so that model shows a wide range of responses, as it is the case in future climate projections.

ENSO at 6ka and 21ka from ocean–atmosphere coupled model simulations

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) plays a central role in the decadal variability of global and regional climate through changing poleward transport of heat. However, realistic simulation of the AMOC, i.e., its strength and spatial structure, remains a challenge for ocean general circulation models (OGCMs) and coupled climate models. Here, we investigate how the simulated AMOC could be affected by improved accuracy of the seawater equation of state (EOS) with an OGCM. Two EOSs used in this study: the UNESCO EOS80, and the “stiffened” EOS derived from the compressibility of sea water and the UNESCO EOS80. Compared to the model using the UNESCO EOS80, the model using the “stiffened” EOS yields stronger deep convection in the Labrador Sea, the Irminger-Iceland-Scotland Basin, and the Greenland-Iceland-Norwegian (GIN) seas, which leads to an improvement in the simulation of the AMOC: Along 26.5°N, the maximum transport is increased from 14.9 to 17.4 Sv and the interface between the upper clockwise cell and lower counterclockwise cell is deepened from 2.8 to 3.3 km, both matching the observations better. Taken the Labrador Sea as an example, the processes, including both direct and indirect causes, that in part responsible for the improved AMOC are as follows. The use of “stiffened” EOS increases the density throughout the water column and weakens the stability of sea water. Moreover, the enhanced cabbeling and thermobaric effect strengthen the vertical advection, intensifying the deep convection and increasing formation of deep water, which eventually improves the simulation of the AMOC. The intensified AMOC, in turn, speeds up the surface return flow, transporting more warm and saline water to the high latitudes in the North Atlantic, which contributes to the densification of surface water. Similar analyses can be applied to the Iceland-Scotland Basin and GIN seas. Thus, the enhanced deep convection and formation of deep water in the Labrador Sea, as well as in the Iceland–Scotland Basin and GIN seas, improve the simulated AMOC.

Impact of seawater equation of state on the simulation of Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation

Molecular simulations employing empirical force fields have provided valuable knowledge about the ice growth process in the past decade. The development of novel computational techniques allows us to study this process, which requires long simulations of relatively large systems, with ab initio accuracy. In this work, we use a neural-network potential for water trained on the revised Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof functional to describe the kinetics of the ice-water interface. We study both ice melting and growth processes. Our results for the ice growth rate are in reasonable agreement with previous experiments and simulations. We find that the kinetics of ice melting presents a different behavior (monotonic) than that of ice growth (non-monotonic). In particular, a maximum ice growth rate of 6.5 Å/ns is found at 14 K of supercooling. The effect of the surface structure is explored by investigating the basal and primary and secondary prismatic facets. We use the Wilson-Frenkel relation to explain these results in terms of the mobility of molecules and the thermodynamic driving force. Moreover, we study the effect of pressure by complementing the standard isobar with simulations at a negative pressure (-1000 bar) and at a high pressure (2000 bar). We find that prismatic facets grow faster than the basal one and that pressure does not play an important role when the speed of the interface is considered as a function of the difference between the melting temperature and the actual one, i.e., to the degree of either supercooling or overheating.

The kinetics of the ice-water interface from ab initio machine learning simulations.

Directional graphene aerogels (DGAs) are proposed as electrode materials to alleviate ionic and mass transport issues in organic redox flow batteries (ORFBs). DGAs with high pore directionality would provide low resistance channels for effective ionic charge and liquid electrolyte transport in these devices. DGAs' porous and directional characteristics can be controlled by the growth of ice crystals during freeze casting, which is influenced by the self-diffusivity of water, phase change driving forces, water-ice graphene interactions, and convection in the water-graphene media. It is found that mass transport-related properties of DGAs, including pore size and directionality, show a significant dependence on freezing temperature, graphene oxide (GO) loadings, and synthesis vessel diameter-to-height ratio (D/H). For the freezing temperature change from -20 to -115 °C, the average pore size progressively decreased from 120 to 20 μm, and the pore directionality transitioned from lamellar to ill-defined structures. When GO loadings were increased from 2 to 10 mg/mL at a fixed freezing temperature, pore size reduction was observed with less defined directionality. Furthermore, the pore directionality diminished with an increased width-to-height aspect ratio of DGA samples due to the buoyancy-driven convective circulation, which interfered with the directional ice/pore growth. Understanding the comprehensive effects of these mechanisms enables the controlled growth of ice crystals, leading to graphene aerogels with highly directional microstructures.
