Uncertainty in the behavior of geotechnical materials (e.g. soil and rock) is the result of imprecise physical processes associated with their formation. This uncertainty provides complexity in modeling the behavior of such materials. The same condition is applied to the behavior of the structural elements dealing with them. In this regard, pile foundations, as the structural elements used to transfer superstructure loads deep into the ground, are subjected to these material uncertainties and modeling complexity. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has demonstrated superior predictive ability compared to traditional methods in modeling the complex behavior of materials. This ability has made AI a popular and particularly amenable option in geotechnical engineering applications. Genetic Programming (GP) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) are two of the most common examples of AI techniques. This paper provides a review of GP and ANN applications in estimation of the pile foundations bearing capacity.

. Automated electronic data loggers revolutionized environmental monitoring by
enabling reliable high-frequency measurements. However, the potential to
monitor the complex environmental interactions involved in global change has
not been fully realized due to the high cost and lack of modularity of
commercially available data loggers. Responding to this need, we developed
the ALog (Arduino logger) series of three open-source data loggers, based on the popular and
easy-to-program Arduino microcontroller platform. ALog data loggers are low
cost, lightweight, and low power; they function between −30 and
 +60 ∘ C, can be powered by readily available alkaline batteries, and
can store up to 32 GB of data locally. They are compatible with standard
environmental sensors, and the ALog firmware library may be expanded to add
additional sensor support. The ALog has measured parameters linked to
weather, streamflow, and glacier melt during deployments of days to years at
field sites in the USA, Canada, Argentina, and Ecuador. The result of this
work is a robust and field-tested open-source data logger that is the direct
descendant of dozens of individuals' contributions to the growing open-source
electronics movement.

Summary
This research aims to determine soil vertical saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) in situ from the measured steady infiltration rate (I), initial soil properties and double-ring infiltrometer (DRI) test data. Characterizing the effects of these variables on the measured steady infiltration rate will enable more accurate prediction of Ks. We measured the effects of the ring diameter, head of ponding, ring depth, initial effective saturation and soil macroscopic capillary length on measured steady infiltration rates. We did this by simulating 864 DRI tests with the finite element program HYDRUS-2D and by conducting 39 full-scale in situ DRI tests, 30 Mini-Disk infiltrometer experiments and four Guelph Permeameter tests. The M5′ model trees and genetic programming (GP) methods were applied to the data to establish formulae to predict the Ks of sandy to sandy-clay soils. The nine field DRI tests were used to verify the computer models. We determined the accuracy of the methods with 30% of the simulated DRI data to compare I/KS values of the finite element models with estimates from the suggested formulae. We also used the suggested formulae to predict the Ks values of 30 field DRI experiments and compared them with values measured by Guelph Permeameter tests. Compared with the GP method, the M5′ model was better at predicting KS, with a correlation coefficient of 0.862 and root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.282 cm s−1. In addition, the latter method estimated Ksvalues of the field experiments more accurately, with an RMSE of 0.00346 cm s−1.

Chicken or poultry farms increase its production as the population in the Philippines demanded more supply of food resources. The livestock production is a billion-peso industry where many Filipinos are depending on. The researchers pursued this delving to address the need in providing an updated technology, to help poultry farmers. This study tackles Poultry Management System, an IOT system that automates the process of giving feeds and water to poultry animals. An Android application was developed to set the time, in which the user intends to give food to the chicken. Water is constantly provided to the poultry once the sensor detects that the water container is empty. As the feed and water tank gets low, a notification system is in place to inform the user about it. A solar panel is used to charge the battery that powers the microcontroller and motors. This technology provided a relevant result in upgrading poultry businesses that saves time and effort.
