Synergism of nutrition, infection, and immunity: an overview.

The oral traditions of medicine and public health have it that malnutrition is an important risk factor for the development of tuberculosis (TB). Malnutrition profoundly affects cell-mediated immunity (CMI), and CMI is the principle host defense against TB. It makes biological sense. Although most health professionals readily accept this principle, much of this belief is based on uncontrolled observations such as disaster situations or on backwards logic from the cachexia common among TB patients. In fact, the evidence in humans is surprisingly thin from the perspective of scientific rigor. And few data, if any, quantify the extent of the relative or attributable risk of TB due to malnutrition. Moreover, until recently, data from experimental animals were based on animal models that were largely not relevant to human TB infection and disease. This article reviews the scientific data supporting the contention that malnutrition is an important risk factor for TB concentrating on observations in humans and on experimental animal studies based on a highly relevant animal model. If it is true, malnutrition may account for a greater population attributable risk of TB than HIV infection, and certainly a much more correctable one.

The effect of administration of large amounts of zinc on immune response and serum lipoproteins was examined. Eleven healthy adult men ingested 150 mg of elemental zinc twice a day for six weeks. This was associated with a reduction in lymphocyte stimulation response to phytohemagglutinin as well as chemotaxis and phagocytosis of bacteria by polymorphonuclear leukocytes. Serum high-density lipoprotein concentration decreased significantly and low-density lipoprotein level increased slightly. The common food fad of zinc supplementation with resultant excessive intake could have deleterious effects in healthy persons. ( JAMA 1984;252:1443-1446)

Purpose




The purpose of this paper is to highlight the importance of Lean methodology through an exhaustive literature review, and its implications and application in the service industry right from its initiation in 1990s till date.




Design/methodology/approach




The paper summarises the evolution of Lean in services and has systematically classified the reviewed literature in four dimensions, namely time, publisher, region and content. Further under “time” dimension, the literature is classified into Pre-Lean era, Lean awareness era, Lean Exploration era and Lean implementation era. Under the “content” dimension, the categories include theoretical foundation, frameworks/models and application/case studies.




Findings




The analysis inferred; Lean is gaining roads in services, though the research is still at nascent stage. Lean is applicable in services though transfer of Lean manufacturing principles to services has certain limitations because of the characteristics of services. The need is to focus on process difference between services and manufacturing. Respect for people and employment engagement is critical to Lean in service. The authors identified the necessity to standardise the Lean service definition, principles, and tools and to develop guidelines for structured implementation in service industry.




Research limitations/implications




Though multiple databases have been taken-up but that does not assume that the literature presented in this paper is by any means comprehensive. Development of a standard model/framework for Lean services is critical for future research. Rigorous industry-specific studies, specifically in developing nations are another area for future research. Future studies could analyse the impact of join applications and possible links between Lean service and other approaches like TQM, Six Sigma, etc., with an aim of process improvement.




Practical implications




This paper would serve as a resource for Lean practitioners as well as researchers as a fundamental platform, contributing to Lean body of knowledge.




Social implications




Service industry has special significance to the society in large. Many services including governments, public interest services, non-profit organisations, healthcare, banking, consulting, etc., has a significant share across markets. Lean being a proven methodology for successful process improvements has to be looked at from a services perspective. This paper helps in such interest.




Originality/value




Publications reviewing the adoption of Lean in services is scarce in literature. This paper serves as an excellent resource for research on the subject and will facilitate academicians and practitioners to objectively understand Lean in service sector.

Lean services: a systematic review

Twenty-four isolates of Rhizoctonia solani (teleomorph: Thanatephorus cucumeris) collected from soil, root and collar rot or foliage blight-infected plants from several locations of north India were used for the analysis of variability by using morphological and molecular markers. Among the morphological characters, variation was observed in hyphal cell size. Seventeen isolates produced few to abundant) white to dark brown or black, small to large sclerotia generally in the middle of the colony. Genetic variation was also analysed by using 11 random amplified polymorphic DNA primers (RAPD), four universal rice primers (URPs) and two inter simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers and fingerprint patterns generated for each isolate. The size of amplified DNA bands ranged from 0.3 to 3.5 kb in all the isolates with RAPD, URP and ISSR markers. The isolates obtained from same hosts and same geographical regions showed similarity in DNA fingerprint profiles barring few exceptions. All the isolates were classified into four groups using DNA markers. A comparison of the data obtained from different markers showed that URPs are superior to RAPD, ISSR and morphological markers in detecting genetic variability among the isolates of R. solani. Hence, use of URP's, which have long primer and higher annealing temperature, would be more sensitive and reliable markers in characterizing genetic diversity in R. solani.

Characterization of Variability in Rhizoctonia solani by Using Morphological and Molecular Markers

Aluminium spherical shells of R/t values between 15 and 240, were axially compressed in an INSTRON machine between flat plates. The modes of their collapse, load-compression and energy-compression curves, and mean collapse loads are presented. A simple analytical model has been developed for the prediction of load-compression and energy-compression curves for the metallic spherical shells, by using the concepts of stationary and rolling plastic hinges. The results thus obtained match well with the experimental results. These results have also been compared with the solutions proposed in earlier studies. Behaviour of these shells is compared with the response of spherical shells (aluminium, mild steel and galvanised steel) of shallow depth, which were also subjected to axial compression between rigid plates. Their load-deformation curves are presented, and their energy-compression behaviour and mean collapse loads are discussed.

The progressive development of the turkey embryo from first cleavage through hypoblast formation was examined in order to determine the applicability of a chicken embryo staging procedure. It was concluded that the temporal and spatial events associated with the development of the early turkey embryo are sufficiently different from those of the chicken embryo to warrant a separate staging procedure. Cleavage is asynchronous and often results in asymmetrical segmentation. Unlike the chicken embryo, which at oviposition has already formed the area pellucida and area opaca and is classified as a Stage X embryo, the turkey embryo at oviposition is only at the beginning of area pellucida formation and is classified as a Stage VII embryo. After about 3 hr of incubation and prior to completion of the area pellucida, hypoblast formation begins at the posterior end, thereby establishing the bilaterally symmetrical pattern of the embryo. When viewed from the dorsal surface, an opaque region is observed at the center of the area pellucida. This opacity is unique to the turkey embryo and is referred to as the area alba. When viewed from the ventral surface, the area alba appears to be composed of large whitish cells. To conclude, the rate of turkey embryo development through the completion of hypoblast formation, which consists of 11 stages, lags behind that of the chicken. Furthermore, the organization as well as origin of the area pellucida and hypoblast observed in the turkey embryo differ from that of the chicken embryo. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
