Some of the important principles that determine the establishment, growth and long-term maintenance of protective Cr2O3, Al2O3 and SiO2 scales on hightemperature iron-, nickel- and cobalt-base alloys are reviewed and discussed. Emphasis is placed on the effects of alloying elements and other additions, such as third elements and reactive elements or oxide dispersions, on each of these processes. Particular attention is paid to transport processes in the scales and the importance of short-circuit paths. Some of the important parameters that influence the long-term mechanical stability of such scales are considered and evaluated.

The influence of alloying elements on the development and maintenance of protective scales

This chapter gives an account of the high temperature corrosion behavior of different metals and alloys oxidized in air or oxygen, where oxygen is the only oxidant. The metal and alloys included here are Fe, Ni, Co, refractory metals, such as Nb, Mo, Ta and W, and Cr 2 O 3 -, Al 2 O 3 - and SiO 2 -forming alloys. Current understanding and data on the nucleation, growth and protectiveness of the oxide formed on each system are summarized, with a section on the effects of minor alloying elements, in particular non-metallic impurities and reactive elements.

Conditions for the initiation of oxide-scale cracking and spallation

Breakaway oxidation or chemical failure has beendescribed in this paper in terms of two possiblemechanisms and applied to the behavior of achromia-forming 20Cr-25Ni austenitic steel. Bothmechanisms relate to the depletion of chromium arisingfrom its selective oxidation and quantitative modelingof the depletion profile is used to identify thedominant chemical-failure mechanism as a function oftemperature. Intrinsic Chemical Failure (InCF) develops whenthe chromium concentration within the alloy at theoxide-metal interface is less than that in equilibriumwith chromia. This occurs at high temperatures, typically above 1390 K, but the temperature atwhich the alloy becomes susceptible to this form offailure increases as the alloy grain size decreases. Atlower temperatures, chemical failure is associated with the general depletion of chromium acrossthe specimen section to a level below which reformationof a healing chromia layer will not occur, should thesurface layer become damaged. In this regime, failure is termed Mechanically Induced ChemicalFailure (MICF).

High temperature oxidation behavior of an equimolar refractory metal-based alloy 20Nb-20Mo-20Cr-20Ti-20Al with and without Si addition

Oxidation tests in a CO2-based atmosphere at 1123 K have been conducted on a series of 20Cr-25Ni stainless steels containing a dispersion of TiN particles and with silicon contents ranging from 0.05 to 2.35 wt.%. In all cases, a chromia surface film whose thickness increased parabolically with time was formed. The parabolic rate constant was a minimum at an intermediate alloy silicon content when an interlayer of silica was formed between the outer oxide and the metal. The significance of this duplex structure on the processes determining the oxidation rate and the extent of oxide spalling is discussed. An additional feature of the attack was the formation of subsurface voidage whose depth again increased parabolically with time. The appropriate rate constant also showed a minimum at an intermediate silicon level and the relationships between this form of attack and the development of the surface oxides are highlighted.

Influence of silicon additions on the oxidation resistance of a stainless steel

A study of the localized pitting attack of 20% Cr/25%Ni stainless steel and a similar alloy containing a dispersion of titanium nitride particles has been made over the temperature range 1023 to 1173 K. Pitting is initiated when localized spoiling of the protective chromic oxide film occurs. Rapid oxidation of the chromium-depleted substrate then proceeds with the formation of an iron-rich oxide mound on the alloy surface and spinels containing nickel, chromium, and iron within the pit itself. A silica layer which, in general, remains on the alloy surface acts as a diffusion barrier during this stage of the reaction. With increasing depth of attack the local chromium concentration in the alloy at the base of the pit attains a critical value (∼16%) for a protective chromium oxide film to reform; the pitting attack then effectively ceases, although a a subsequent slow rate of growth continues through the protective film at the base. The observed maximum depth of pitting as a function of time is consistent with the parabolic variation predicted by the proposed mechanism. There is no significant difference in the kinetics of attack between the alloys examined.
