Parallel Electronic Prototyping of Physical Objects

A computer-aided design technique for obtaining the optimum shapes of insulator sheds is presented. The non-linear shape optimization problem is formulated with the mass as the objective function to be minimized and the specified electrical and mechanical performance requirements as the constraints. The shape of the shed is numerically represented by the key dimensions of the shed. Finite element analysis is utilized repeatedly to obtain the stresses at critical points during the optimization iterations. A computer program has been developed to test the presented technique. The required specifications of the shed and an initial design are input to the program. Smooth convergence to the optimal design, with drastic changes in the shape, takes place without any user interaction even when the initial design is infeasible.

Shape optimization based electronic prototyping is part of any future scenario for intelligent manufacturing. Unfortunately, the resulting optimization problems can be prohibitively large. Moreover, it is known that most of the optimization problems belong to the class of "hard" problems. Thus, seeking parallel methods for their solution is well justified. The idea of divide and conquer is already used to approximate the solution of large optimization problems sequentially. This suggests that it might be more efficient to decouple the system into several smaller subsystems, optimize them locally and in parallel, and then approximate the global solution by coordinating some form of global optimization on the interfaces of the subsystems. This approach is referred to as a two-level scheme. A shape and size optimization algorithm is developed to incorporate the shape and size variables in a recently developed machine tool simulation and design methodology known as Integrated Machining Process Design Simulator (IMPDS). This shape optimization algorithm, using coordinates of master nodes, parameters of geometric equations, coordinate linking and symmetry option approaches presents a general and flexible way of controlling and optimizing the structural shape of machine tool elements. An application of the proposed shape and size optimization algorithm indicates that the shape and size parameters have significant effects on the structural characteristics and the dynamic behavior of machine tool elements.
