Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the structure and regulation of the corpus allatum. The corpora allata (CA) are endocrine glands in the posterior regions of the head, or in rare instances in the thorax, which are closely associated with the stomatogastric nervous system. This chapter focuses on the regulation of the CA. It also describes the embryology, innervations, and the relationships of the structure, particularly the ultrastructure, to its synthetic activity. The characteristic shape of the CA is ovoid to round but they may be elongate as in large larvae and adults of Libellula depressa. The size of the glands is frequently about the diameter of the aorta or smaller; however, there is much variation among species and even within a species, size differs with age, sex, polymorphism, and the activity cycle of the glands. Although only one type of glandular cell occurs in the CA, there are a variety of types of CA with respect to the number of cells per gland and the relative size of the cells. The CA are surrounded by a continuous noncellular basal lamina, roughly 0.1-1 μ m thick. This material occasionally projects between two glandular cells into the interior of the gland, forming trabeculae that may accompany nerves and trachea.

This chapter briefly discusses hormonal control of diapause. Diapause is an arrest in development accompanied by a major shutdown in metabolic activity. The evolution of diapause is arguably one of the most critical events bolstering the success of insects. The capacity to periodically shut down development has enabled insects and their arthropod relatives to invade environments that are seasonally hostile. Indeed, very few environments permit continuous insect development. Even in the tropics, where temperatures throughout the year may be compatible with ectotherm development, seasonal patterns of rainfall drive cycles of plant growth that favor insects with the ability to periodically become dormant. Unlike a simple quiescence that is an immediate response to an unfavorable environmental condition, diapause is a genetically programmed response that occurs at a specific stage for each species. Sometimes, the insect will enter diapause at this particular stage in each generation regardless of the environmental conditions it receives—a developmental program referred to as obligatory diapause. Much more frequently, the decision to enter diapause is determined by environmental factors, usually day length, received by that individual or its mother at an earlier developmental stage. This is referred to as facultative diapause.

In females ofPolistes gallicus the activity of corpora allata (CA) was determined volumetrically as well as radiochemically using the in vitro assay for juvenile hormone (JH). The results we have compared with the ovarian activity. During the period of egg maturation after overwintering the volume of CA is well correlated with the synthetic activity. But in overwintering females and in ovariectomized females we have observed very large glands which produced only little amounts of JH like the small glands of parasitized wasps. In all dominant females the CA we have found to be larger and more active than in subordinated females indicating that changes in the endocrine activity may be a primary result of social hierarchy.
