The paper gives first quantitative estimates on the modulus of continuity of the spectral measure for weak mixing suspension flows over substitution automorphisms, which yield information about the "fractal" structure of these measures. The main results are, first, a Hoelder estimate for the spectral measure of almost all suspension flows with a piecewise constant roof function; second, a log-Hoelder estimate for self-similar suspension flows; and, third, a Hoelder asymptotic expansion of the spectral measure at zero for such flows. Our second result implies log-Hoelder estimates for the spectral measures of translation flows along stable foliations of pseudo-Anosov automorphisms. A key technical tool in the proof of the second result is an "arithmetic-Diophantine" proposition, which has other applications. In the appendix this proposition is used to derive new decay estimates for the Fourier transforms of Bernoulli convolutions.

On the modulus of continuity for spectral measures in substitution dynamics

We introduce a new tool to study the spectral type of rank-one transformations using the method of the central limit theorem for trigonometric sums. We get some new applications.

Using the combinatorial Singer's construction, we exhibit a sequence of flat polynomials with coefficients $0,1$. We thus get that there exist a sequences of Newman polynomials that are $L^\alpha$-flat, $0 \leq \alpha <2$. This settles an old question of Littlewood. In the opposite direction, we prove that the Newman polynomials are not $L^\alpha$-flat, for $\alpha \geq 4$. We further establish that there is a conservative, ergodic, $\sigma$-finite measure preserving transformation with simple Lebesgue spectrum. This answer affirmatively a long-standing problem of Banach from the Scottish book. Consequently, we obtain a positive answer to Mahler's problem in the class of Newman polynomials, and this allows us also to answer a question raised by Bourgain on the supremum of the $L^1$-norm of $L^2$normalized idempotent polynomials.

Generalized Riesz products similar to the type which arise as the spectral measure for a rank-one transformation are studied. A condition for the mutual singularity of two such measures is given. As an application, a probability space of transformations is presented in which almost all transformations are singular with respect to Lebesgue measure.
