Three donor–acceptor type π-conjugated polymers, poly[2,3-di(2-pyridyl)-5,8-bis(2-thienyl)quinoxaline] (PPTQ), poly[2,3-di(2-pyridyl)-5,8-bis(2-(3-butylthiophen))quinoxaline] (PPBTQ) and poly[2,3-di(2-pyridyl)-5,8-bis(2-(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene))quinoxaline] (PETQ), containing the 2,3-di(2-pyridyl) quinoxaline moiety in the backbone as the acceptor unit and different thiophene derivatives as donor units were synthesized electrochemically. Characterization of the corresponding polymers was conducted by cyclic voltammetry (CV), UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Spectroelectrochemistry and electrochemical analyses demonstrated that all three polymers can undergo both p- and n-type doping processes. PPTQ exhibits purple red color in the reduced state, violet blue color in the neutral state, and gray blue color in the oxidation state. PPBTQ exhibits red color in the reduced state, light steel blue color in the neutral state, and dark slate blue color in the oxidation state. PPETQ exhibits green color in the reduced state, yellow color in the neutral state, and a colorless highly transmissive state in the oxidation state. PPETQ and PPBTQ revealed excellent optical contrasts of 80.3% and 78.2%, respectively, in the NIR region. The outstanding optical contrasts in the NIR region, high stability and fast switching times make these polymers excellent candidates for NIR device applications.

Abstract In the past few years, there was a tremendous growth in conjugated polymer nanofibers via design of novel conjugated polymers with inorganic materials. Synthetic routes to these conjugated polymers involve new, mild polymerization techniques, which enable the formation of well-defined polymer architectures. This review provides interest in the development of novel (semi) conducting polymers, which combine both organic and inorganic blocks in one framework. Due to their ability to act as chemosensors or to detect various chemical species in environmental and biological systems, fluorescent conjugated polymers have gained great interest. Nanofibers of metal oxides and sulfides are particularly interesting in both their way of applications and fundamental research. These conjugated nanofibers operated for many applications in organic electronics, optoelectronics, and sensors. Synthesis of electrospun fibers by electrospinning technique discussed in this review is a simple method that forms conjugated polymer nanofibers. This review provides the basics of the technique and its recent advances in the formation of highly conducting and high-mobility polymer fibers towards their adoption in electronic application.

Conductive and photoactive nature of conjugated polymer based on thiophene functionalized thiazole or benzothiadiazole

A new conjugated polymer with donor-accepter architectures poly(1,4-dioctyloxyphenylene-2,5-diylethenylene- (2,3-dipyridine-2-ylquinoxaline-5,8-diyl)ethylene) (PPV-BD) was synthesized successfully, in which the electron-donating unit was alkoxy substituted phenyl ring, and the electron-accepting unit was a quinoxaline. The resulting polymer had a lower band-gap (1.98 eV) compared to poly(2-methoxy-5-(2-ethyl)hexoxy-phenylenevinylene) (MEH-PPV, 2.12 eV), and was characterized by infrared spectroscopy (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Its photoinduced charge transfer applications in polymer solar cell (PSC) and trinitrotoluene (TNT) detection were studied respectively, and the results indicated that this polymer might be a good candidate material for PSC or detecting TNT in solution.
