High-accuracy mass spectrometry with stored ions

The second generation cryogenic gas-filled stopping chamber for SHIPTRAP (cryocell) is being developed. The gas cell will be operated with helium gas at 25 mbar cooled down to 77 K. A stopping efficiency is estimated to be about 90% for reaction products of the fusion-evaporation reaction 48Ca on 208Pb. An extraction efficiency of about 40% is considered a realistic estimate for the cryocell. Thus, a total efficiency of about 35% is expected. The cryocell design and its expected performance will be presented in this paper.

A new cryogenic gas-filled stopping chamber for SHIPTRAP

Various tests for stopping energetic, 100– 150 MeV /amu, heavy ions with narrow momentum distributions in a 50 cm gas cell filled with helium at 0.5– 2 bar pressure were performed. The fraction of ions stopped in the gas was measured as a function of absorber thickness, gas pressure and length of ion path within the gas cell. Information on the range distribution was obtained and the residual energy distribution of ions was measured under different conditions. The experimental results for various beams are compared with stopping power calculations in the literature. The results are discussed in the context of the proposed RIA facility.

Stopping energetic heavy ions in one-bar helium: narrow incident momentum distributions

Cooling techniques for low-energy radioactive ion beams are reviewed together with applications on high-precision measurements of ground state properties of exotic nuclei. The emphasis in the presentation is on cooling, bunching and improving the overall characteristics of ion beams by RFQ-driven buffer gas cooling devices. Application of cooled and bunched beams in collinear laser spectroscopy to extract isotope shifts and hyperfine structure are presented with examples on radioactive Ti, Zr and Hf isotopes. The impact of the new-generation coolers on mass measurements of short-lived nuclei is discussed with examples on precision measurements of masses of super-allowed beta emitters. As a new concept, decay spectroscopy of radioactive ions trapped in a cooler Penning trap is presented.

Ion beam coolers in nuclear physics

Tests of the unitarity of the Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Masakawa (CKM) matrix offer an important avenue for constraining the Standard Model of the electroweak interaction. Several methods are currently used to determine Vud, the largest element in the top-row normalization test. One such method is through the study of superallowed T = 1/2 mixed mirror transitions, which offers a complementary method to the current most-precise value that is determined from superallowed pure Fermi 0+ → 0+ transitions. The precision currently achievable by this method is currently limited by the very low number of transitions for which the Fermi-to-Gamow-Teller mixing ratio ρ has been measured. St. Benedict, the Superallowed Transition Beta-Neutrino Decay-Ion-Coincidence Trap, is currently under development at the University of Notre Dame’s Nuclear Science Laboratory, and intends to determine ρ for a range of new isotopes through measurements of the β-neutrino asymmetry parameter aβν using a linear Paul trap. In order to trap these ions, the fast, continuous secondary beam separated by the TwinSol twin solenoid separator must be thermalized and bunched. The system through which this will be done will feature a large-volume gas cell in which the ions will be thermalized, a double-RF-funnel-based ion guide system for the extraction of the ions, and a radiofrequency quadrupole (RFQ) to provide cooled ion bunches for capture in the Paul trap.

Stopped, bunched beams for the TwinSol facility

The ion trap facility SHIPTRAP is being set up to deliver very clean and cool beams of singly-charged recoil ions produced at the SHIP velocity filter at GSI Darmstadt. SHIPTRAP consists of a gas cell for stopping and thermalizing high-energy recoil ions from SHIP, an rf ion guide for extraction of the ions from the gas cell, a linear rf trap for accumulation and bunching of the ions, and a Penning trap for isobaric purification. The progress in testing the rf ion guide is reported. A transmission of about 93(5)% was achieved.
