Spin valves using amorphous magnetic layers

We present results of anisotropy and exchange-coupling studies of asymmetric Co/Cr/Fe trilayers and superlattices grown by molecular beam epitaxy on Cr(001)/Mg(001) buffers and substrates. The magnetic properties have been investigated using both the longitudinal magneto-optical Kerr effect and ferromagnetic resonance. The hysteresis data obtained from the trilayer system were fit to a theoretical model which contains both bilinear and biquadratic coupling. The effective in-plane anisotropy was found to be of fourfold symmetry with the same easy-axis orientation for both the Fe and Co layers. An analysis of the easy-axis hysteresis loops indicates long-period oscillatory coupling and also suggests a short periodic coupling. We show that weakly antiferromagnetically coupled asymmetric films might serve as potential candidates for improved spin-valve systems. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Magnetic exchange-coupling effects in asymmetric trilayer structures of mbe-grown co/cr/fe

Current status is addressed for spin polarized transport such as spin-dependent scattering and spin-dependent tunneling in artificial structured magnetic thin films. The main points discussed include the physical origin of the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) and various GMR materials. The applications of the GMR to magnetic sensors such as read heads for ultra high density magnetic recording are also discussed.

Giant Magnetoresistance and Its Sensor Applications

The concept of spin-filter spin-valve (SFSV) films is reviewed. The dependence of the free layer structure on the spin-filter effect was investigated by using model films and two types of free layers were compared, a single CoFe layer and a conventional NiFe/Co free layer. At the same magnetic thickness of the free layer, the SFSV films with a CoFe free layer showed a larger magnetoresistance (MR) ratio than those with a NiFe/Co free layer. This is partly attributed to the thinner CoFe free layer thickness, which is due to the fact that the CoFe free layer has higher Bs than the NiFe/Co free layer. Moreover, SFSV films with a CoFe free layer still showed a larger MR ratio when the free layer thickness was the same. It suggests that other factors contribute to the high MR performance, such as the quality of the interface between a free layer and a high conductance layer. Spin-filter spin-valve films with an ultrathin CoFe free layer

Addition of a small amount of Pt greatly enhances the magnetic hardness of Co films. By combining this hard Co94.5Pt5.5 film with a soft permalloy film, we prepared Co-Pt/Cu/permalloy sandwiches, and investigated their magnetoresistance and the interlayer coupling between the two magnetic layers. The sandwiches exhibited large magnetoresistance of up to 4.4% without any buffer underlayers, although the magnetization reversal field of the permalloy layer was increased due to the ferromagnetic interlayer coupling with a Co-Pt layer. In order to reduce the coupling, the interfacial roughness in the sandwiches and the magnetization fluctuations in each magnetic layer must be reduced.

Co90Fe10/Cu spin-valve structures were prepared by the RF and DC magnetron sputtering methods. X-ray diffraction data showed that the spin-valves on a sapphire substrate exhibited good fcc (111) preferred orientations. The maximum value of Δρ/ρ0 was 11%, which was larger than that obtained for Co/Cu spin-valve structures.
