A critical review on the treatment of dye-containing wastewater: Ecotoxicological and health concerns of textile dyes and possible remediation approaches for environmental safety

Olive stones have been widely used as a renewable energy biowaste source. As they are rich in elemental carbon (40–45 wt%), much research focussed on effectively converting olive stones, as precursors, into activated carbon adsorbents. However, only a few studies have concentrated on summarising the various techniques used to produce activated carbon from olive stone. This article reviews the research undertaken on the production and application of activated carbon as an adsorbent from olive stones for wastewater treatment. Various physical, chemical and physico-chemical treatments to remove heavy metals, organics and dyes are discussed, and the resultant adsorption capacities are reported. In several cases, very high adsorption capacities are recorded. Finally, the future prospects of these materials as adsorbents are discussed, and after further development work, olive stone-derived activated carbons have great potential especially in the area of organic polluted wastewaters.

Production and applications of activated carbons as adsorbents from olive stones

The greatest problem in the Fe(II)/H2O2 Fenton reaction is the low production of ·OH owing to the inefficient Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle and the low decomposition efficiency of H2O2 (<30%). Herein, we report a new discovery regarding the significant co-catalytic effect of WS2 on the decomposition of H2O2 in a photoassisted Fe(II)/H2O2 Fenton system. With the help of WS2 co-catalytic effect, the H2O2 decomposition efficiency can be increased from 22.9% to 60.1%, such that minimal concentrations of H2O2 (0.4 mmol/L) and Fe2+ (0.14 mmol/L) are necessary for the standard Fenton reaction. Interestingly, the co-catalytic Fenton strategy can be applied to the simultaneous oxidation of phenol (10 mg/L) and reduction of Cr(VI) (40 mg/L), and the corresponding degradation and reduction rates can reach up to 80.9% and 90.9%, respectively, which are much higher than the conventional Fenton reaction (52.0% and 31.0%). Enhancement of H2O2 Decomposition by the Co-catalytic Effect of WS2 on the Fenton Reaction for the Synchronous Reduction of Cr(VI) and Remediation of Phenol

The shortage of water resources and increasingly serious water pollution have driven the development of high-efficiency water treatment technology. Among a variety of technologies, adsorption is widely used in environmental remediation. As a class of typical adsorbents, metal oxides have been developed for a long time and continued to attract widespread attention, since they have unique physicochemical properties, including abundant surface active sites, high chemical stability, and adjustable shape and size. In this review, the basic principles of the adsorption process will be first elucidated, including affecting factors, evaluation index, adsorption mechanisms, and common kinetic and isotherm models. Then, the adsorption properties of several typical metal oxides, and key parameters affecting the adsorption performance such as particle/pore size, morphology, functionalization and modification, supports and calcination temperature will be discussed, as well as their application in the removal of various inorganic and organic contaminants. In addition, desorption and recycling of the spent adsorbent are summarized. Finally, the future development of metal oxide based adsorbents is also discussed.
