Upper thermal limits vary less than lower limits among related species of terrestrial ectotherms. This pattern may reflect weak or uniform selection on upper limits, or alternatively tight evolutionary constraints. We investigated this issue in 94 Drosophila species from diverse climates and reared in a common environment to control for plastic effects that may confound species comparisons. We found substantial variation in upper thermal limits among species, negatively correlated with annual precipitation at the central point of their distribution and also with the interaction between precipitation and maximum temperature, showing that heat resistance is an important determinant of Drosophila species distributions. Species from hot and relatively dry regions had higher resistance, whereas resistance was uncorrelated with temperature in wetter regions. Using a suite of analyses we showed that phylogenetic signal in heat resistance reflects phylogenetic inertia rather than common selection pressures. Current species distributions are therefore more likely to reflect environmental sorting of lineages rather than local adaptation. Similar to previous studies, thermal safety margins were small at low latitudes, with safety margins smallest for species occupying both humid and dry tropical environments. Thus, species from a range of environments are likely to be at risk owing to climate change. Together these findings suggest that this group of insects is unlikely to buffer global change effects through marked evolutionary changes, highlighting the importance of facilitating range shifts for maintaining biodiversity.

Upper thermal limits of Drosophila are linked to species distributions and strongly constrained phylogenetically

Variation in size of home range is among the most important parameters required for effective conservation and management of a species. However, the fact that home ranges can vary widely within a species makes data transfer between study areas difficult. Home ranges of Eurasian lynx Lynx lynx vary by a factor of 10 between different study areas in Europe. This study aims to try and explain this variation in terms of readily available indices of prey density and environmental productivity. On an individual scale we related the sizes of 52 home ranges, derived from 23 (9:14 male:female) individual resident lynx obtained from south-eastern Norway, with an index of density of roe deer Capreolus capreolus. This index was obtained from the density of harvested roe deer within the municipalities covered by the lynx home ranges. We found a significant negative relationship between harvest density and homerange size for both sexes. On a European level we related the sizes of 111 lynx (48:63 male: female) from 10 study sites to estimates derived from remote sensing of environmental productivity and seasonality. A multiple linear regression model indicated that productivity of the study site had a clear negative relationship with home-range size. At both scales, sex emerged as a significant explanatory variable with males having larger home ranges than females. In addition, the size of male home-ranges increased faster with decreasing prey density than for females. These analyses support widely held predictions that variation in home-range size is due to variation in prey density.

Climate envelope models (CEMs) are widely used to forecast future shifts in species ranges under climate change, but these models are rarely validated against independent data, and their fundamental assumption that climate limits species distributions is rarely tested. Here, we use the data on the introduction of five South African dung beetle species to Australia to test whether CEMs developed in the native range can predict distribution in the introduced range, where the confounding effects of dispersal limitation, resource limitation and the impact of natural enemies have been removed, leaving climate as the dominant constraint. For two of the five species, models developed in the native range predict distribution in the introduced range about as well as models developed in the introduced range where we know climate limits distribution. For the remaining three species, models developed in the native range perform poorly, implying that non-climatic factors limit the native distribution of these species and need to be accounted for in species distribution models. Quantifying relevant non-climatic factors and their likely interactions with climatic variables for forecasting range shifts under climate change remains a challenging task.

Do climate envelope models transfer? A manipulative test using dung beetle introductions

Forty-one shea tree populations were sampled, spanning the main climatic zones of Vitellaria paradoxa Gaertn. in Mali and 10–35 adult trees were chosen randomly in the agroforestry parklands of each area. A total of 12 morphological traits, related to tree morphology, fruit size and leaf form were measured. The variance components showed that variation among populations represented the smaller percentage of the total variation with most of the values varying between 15 and 30%. The repeatability coefficient was generally high for tree within populations with values ranging between 0.23 and 0.78. Although genetic correlations cannot be accurately estimated, due to difficulties in separation from environmental effects, the results indicate that there is a very low genetic relation between the three kinds of traits, i.e., between those related to tree, those related to leaf and those related to fruit. Leaf and fruit size traits were positively and significantly correlated with rainfall, although tree circumference was negatively correlated with rainfall and the significantly larger shea trees were noted in the drier areas – an observation thought linked to human management of the parklands. Soil drainage and parkland density, however, did not explain differences between populations for fruit traits. This study offers preliminary information for the development of a breeding population for a shea tree improvement programme. The value of repeatability, the low correlation between sets of traits and the distribution of variation, suggest that selection of many individual trees within a few populations, would allow capture of large genetic gain especially for fruit traits.

Temperature is a primary determinant of insect and other ectotherm distribution and activity. Physiological and behavioral adaptations allow many insects to survive at subzero temperatures, yet the evolutionary influences on insect cold tolerance are unclear. Supercooling points, basal cold tolerance, cold-tolerance strategy, and inducible cold tolerance from rapid cold-hardening or acclimation were measured in a phylogenetically independent context in larvae of 27 phylogenetically diverse Drosophila species acquired from stock collections. Supercooling capacity is attributed primarily to physical factors, such as dry mass and water mass. Species of the obscura group were more resistant to acute cold tolerance than species of other groups within the genus, and plasticity in cold tolerance is constrained by phylogeny rather than by basal cold tolerance. Typically, in higher organisms, each chromosome has a centromere and two arms. The short arm is called the p arm and the longer arm the q arm. Chromosome bands (see Figure 1) are identified by differential staining, usually with Giemsa-based stains, and many disease-related defects have been mapped to these bands; such mappings have played an important role in classical cytogenetics. With the availability of complete sequences for several genomes, there have been efforts to link these bands with specific sequence locations (Furey and Haussler, 2003). The estimated location of the bands in the reference genomes can be obtained from the UCSC genome browser, and data linking genes to particular bands can be obtained from a variety of sources such as the NCBI. This vignette demonstrates tools that allow the use of categories derived from chromosome bands, that is, the relevant categories are determined a priori by a mapping of genes to chromosome bands. Figure 1 shows an ideogram of human chromosome 12, with the band 12q21 shaded. As shown in the figure, 12q21 can be divided into more granular levels 12q21.1, 12q21.2, and 12q21.3. 12q21.3 can itself be divided at an even finer level of resolution into 12q21.31, 12q21.32, and 12q21.33. Moving towards less granular bands, 12q21 is a part of 12q2 which is again a part of 12q. We take advantage of this nested structure of the bands in our analysis.
