Global warming due to greenhouse gases mostly carbon dioxide has become a serious concern worldwide. Carbon capture using adsorption, absorption, chemical looping combustion, cryogenic and membrane separations has been widely studied to tackle this problem. Significant research efforts have been made in membrane based carbon capture employable in both pre- and post-combustion options as it is a simple, efficient economical and environmentally benign option. In this paper, a comprehensive review has been done on this technology with reference to various aspects viz., synthesis, characterization and performance analysis of various membrane materials, contactors and their design aspects, modeling and simulation studies and membrane wetting phenomenon. The prospects and future challenges of the membrane based carbon capture are also highlighted.

Process and engineering trends in membrane based carbon capture

This paper is Part 7 of the post-combustion carbon capture technology Review Series. It reviews recent progress and developments in hollow fibre membrane contactor research for CO2 capture. Hollow fiber membrane contactors have been studied for CO2 capture from a gas stream since 1985. In recent years, this technology has been considered a promising alternative to conventional absorption technologies, since it offers higher absorption efficiency and avoids common operating problems found in traditional packed columns. In this review, research development focused on CO2 capture using hollow fiber membrane contactors – including membrane module design, mass transfer principles, membrane wetting, simulation and modeling, and solvent regeneration – is presented. Additionally, current significant pilot-scale applications of this technology are discussed and recommendations for future work are presented.

Hollow fiber membrane contactor absorption of co2 from the flue gas: review and perspective

Membrane-based chemical absorption of CO2 from gas mixtures containing CO2 using tetramethylammonium glycinate solution was studied in this work. The absorption media studied in this work involves a porous membrane contactor which is utilized as a physical barrier for contacting feed gas stream and the chemical solvent. The considered membrane module type was hollow fiber. The equations of concentration for both CO2 and solvent were derived and solved numerically using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach. The equations were solved in two dimensions and in cylindrical coordinate, i.e. axial and radial directions in order to obtain the concentration and mass transfer flux of CO2 and solvent in the hollow-fiber contactor. Both convection and diffusional mass transfers were taken into account in the simulations. The findings of CFD simulation demonstrated that as the flow rate as well as the concentration of the absorbent increased, the CO2 removal from gas mixture enhanced; while, the enhancement of gas flow rate declined the removal rate of CO2 in the contactor. The proposed simulation method revealed to be capable of predicting CO2 capture from gas mixtures in membrane contactors.
