TL;DR: In this paper, the magnetic properties of obsidians are examined for their potential in sourcing obsidian artifacts, and three simple magnetic parameters are found to be effective discriminants of many Mediterranean, Central European and near Eastern sources.

TL;DR: A series of energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence analyses has been undertaken in response to archaeological problems relating to 1st millennium AD glass excavated in Britain this paper, and the aim of the work was to furnish a set of comparable analytical results to be used in assessing hypotheses concerning the general state and development of glass technology through this period.

The distribution and sources of archaeological obsidian from southern France
TL;DR: One hundred-and-sixty-two pieces of obsidian have been found at 50 archaeological localities in southern France, mainly from sites of the Chassey culture (4th and 3rd millennium Neolithic), but there is one impressed ware site (Early Neolithic) and four Copper Age sites with obsidian.

The application of Mössbauer spectroscopy to the characterisation of western mediterranean obsidian

TL;DR: In this article, the authors measured the Mossbauer spectra of obsidian from known geological flows and from archaeological site material from the western Mediterranean region and found that the ratio of ferric to ferrous ions is much higher in the surface layers.
