For more than half a century, researchers around the world have been engaged in attempts to achieve fusion ignition as a proof of principle of various fusion concepts. As recently reported, a burning plasma state, where the alpha-heating in the plasma is the primary source of heating, was achieved in laboratory experiments. Following the Lawson criterion, an ignited plasma is one where the fusion heating power is high enough to overcome all the physical processes that cool the fusion plasma, creating a positive thermodynamic feedback loop with rapidly increasing temperature. In inertially confined fusion, ignition is a state where the fusion plasma can begin ``burn propagation'' into surrounding cold fuel, enabling the possibility of high energy gain. While ``scientific breakeven'' (i.e. unity target gain) has not yet been achieved, this talk reports the first controlled fusion experiment on the National Ignition Facility to produce capsule gain greater than unity (here 5.8) and reach ignition by many different formulations of the Lawson criterion. In the talk, we will discuss some key basic physics inertial confinement fusion (ICF) principles behind the burning plasma and ignition results as well as discuss future challenges.

Lawson Criterion for Ignition Exceeded In An Inertial Fusion Experiment

On December 5, 2022, an indirect drive fusion implosion on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) achieved a target gain G_{target} of 1.5. This is the first laboratory demonstration of exceeding "scientific breakeven" (or G_{target}>1) where 2.05 MJ of 351 nm laser light produced 3.1 MJ of total fusion yield, a result which significantly exceeds the Lawson criterion for fusion ignition as reported in a previous NIF implosion [H. Abu-Shawareb et al. (Indirect Drive ICF Collaboration), Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 075001 (2022)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.129.075001]. This achievement is the culmination of more than five decades of research and gives proof that laboratory fusion, based on fundamental physics principles, is possible. This Letter reports on the target, laser, design, and experimental advancements that led to this result.

Achievement of Target Gain Larger than Unity in an Inertial Fusion Experiment

Inertial confinement fusion seeks to create burning plasma conditions in a spherical capsule implosion, which requires efficiently absorbing the driver energy in the capsule, transferring that energy into kinetic energy of the imploding DT fuel and then into internal energy of the fuel at stagnation. We report new implosions conducted on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) with several improvements on recent work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 245003 (2018)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.120.245003; Phys. Rev. E 102, 023210 (2020)PRESCM2470-004510.1103/PhysRevE.102.023210]: larger capsules, thicker fuel layers to mitigate fuel-ablator mix, and new symmetry control via cross-beam energy transfer; at modest velocities, these experiments achieve record values for the implosion energetics figures of merit as well as fusion yield for a NIF experiment.

Record Energetics for an Inertial Fusion Implosion at NIF.

The quest for controlled fusion has been ongoing since the middle of the last century. Recently, however, there have been great strides in inertial confinement fusion, a method based on creating high energy densities through implosions. This review covers the three major approaches being pursued in the U.S., discussing key concepts, principles, and technical challenges. 

Physics principles of inertial confinement fusion and U.S. program overview

We report the demonstration of a diode-pumped Tm:YLF laser operating at 1.88 µm that produces pulse energies up to 3.88 J in 20 ns. The compact system consists of a Q-switched cavity-dumped oscillator generating 18 mJ pulses, which are then amplified in a four-pass power amplifier. Energies up to 38.1 J were obtained with long-pulse amplifier operation. These results illustrate the high energy storage and extraction capabilities of diode-pumped Tm:YLF, opening the path to high peak and average power mid-infrared solid-state lasers.

Demonstration of a compact, multi-joule, diode-pumped Tm:YLF laser

The National Ignition Facility (NIF) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, is the first of its kind megajoule-class laser facility with 192 beams capable of delivering over 1.8 MJ and 500TW of 351 nm light for high accuracy laser-matter interaction experiments. It has been commissioned and operated since 2009 to support a wide range of missions including the study of inertial confinement fusion, high energy density physics, material science, and laboratory astrophysics. In the first section of this paper we discuss the current status of laser performance obtained during the 408 target experiments completed in 2017. The performance spanned a wide range of laser energies, powers and pulse durations as requested for these target experiments. A special emphasis is given on energy delivery and cone power accuracy in the UV, as these are key parameters for successful experiments. In the second section of the paper, the results obtained during the 2017 performance quad campaign are briefly described. During this campaign a series of laser-only shots were taken to perform tests at elevated energies on a single NIF quad. These tests were designed to assess laser performance limits and operational costs against predictive models. This campaign culminated with the delivery of ~54 kJ of UV on a single quad of NIF, and 14 kJ on a single beam aperture, which are both to our knowledge the largest energies achieved to date for a neodymium-glass, frequency tripled architecture.

The national ignition facility: laser performance status and performance quad results at elevated energy

We investigate the formation and diffraction efficiency of plasma gratings generated by the interference of two laser beams crossing at a small angle on the surface of a planar aluminum target. Such gratings were observed during National Ignition Facility experiments with the ratio of energy in the first-order to zeroth order of ≈60%. Recently, additional experiments were performed on the Optical Sciences Laser. These experiments with only two interfering beams showed high normalized energy (ratio of energy in diffracted order to zeroth order) of approximately 10% and 3% at the first and second diffracted order locations, respectively, for intensities less than 1012 W/cm2. The existence of the higher-orders is the characteristic of diffraction from gratings in the Raman-Nath as opposed to the Bragg regime. In addition, we show conical diffraction from the generated plasma grating. Using numerical simulations, we explore the large difference in diffraction efficiency observed in these two experiments and highlight the role of plasma temperature and density scale length. The simulations suggest a modulation depth of the plasma grating refractive index ranging from 1.77 × 10−4 to 3.5 × 10−2.
