Diffusion and isomer shift of interstitial iron in silicon observed via in-beam Mössbauer spectroscopy.

We use Mossbauer spectroscopy in combination with atomic scale modeling in order to gather a comprehensive understanding of the growth and the dynamics of cobalt nanoprecipitates in silver. The modeling makes use of classical molecular dynamics in the canonical ensemble by means of the Rahman-Parinello technique. Atomic interactions are governed by an embedded atom model, which is validated for the static Co-Ag interaction by means of a comparison with extended x-ray absorption fine structure measurements and for the dynamical interaction with Mossbauer spectroscopy data. This allows us to identify the cluster size dependent atomic arrangements at the cluster-matrix interface, where strong relaxation takes place. A detailed analysis of the Mossbauer spectra taken at two temperatures after annealing at different temperatures allows us not only to characterize the cluster size dependence of magnetic properties, but also to evidence a possible Ostwald ripening growth mechanism. The mean and interface Debye temperatures are deduced from the Mossbauer spectra and found quite consistent with the model predictions. On this basis, the atomic scale modeling allows us to identify detail of atomic vibrational properties as a function of distance from the cluster center and a discontinuity of the vibration amplitudes at the precipitate-matrix interface is evidenced.

The $^{57}\mathrm{Fe}$ M\"ossbauer emission spectra of $^{57}\mathrm{Co}$ implanted in the rare-gas matrices Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe, and the rare-gas mixture Ar+10 at. % Xe show systematic behavior in the ionization states of $^{57}\mathrm{Fe}$ following the electron-capture decay of $^{57}\mathrm{Co}$. This systematic behavior can be explained by a charge transfer process via resonant tunneling between the Fe ion and one of its rare-gas nearest neighbors. The recombination with ``free'' electrons is found to be important in the Xe matrix only. A new \ensuremath{\Delta}〈${r}^{2}$〉 value is given for the M\"ossbauer transition in $^{57}\mathrm{Fe}$.

Mössbauer study of the proximity gettering of cobalt atoms to He-induced nanosized voids in c-Si.

We induced Co to form inclusions in Ag by ion implantation of Co into Ag and by coevaporation of both elements in a MBE system. Mossbauer spectroscopy at 4.2 K reveals the hyperfine fields present in the bulk and at the interface of the precipitates. By post-implanting the 57Co activity into the coevaporated samples, we strongly enhanced this interface population, which facilitates the determination of the associated magnetic hyperfine field. The dependence of the precipitate size on the Co concentration and annealing treatment is monitored. We propose a simple model which allows to estimate the precipitate size in the case of preferential interface population.

Determination of size and interface hyperfine field of Co nanosized precipitates in Ag by Mössbauer spectroscopy

We observe the trapping of implanted radioactive 57 Co atoms at empty nano-cavities formed in {111} Si by the desorption of He from bubbles. The absorption of 14.4 keV γ-rays roughly monitors the displacement of the activity, while anodic stripping and counting the remaining 122 keV γ-ray intensity is employed to obtain an accurate depth profile and to isolate the wanted fraction of the sample. Mossbauer spectroscopy shows that only damage and/or CoSi 2 -nuclei related sites are present in samples implanted at 300 and 400°C. In a sample implanted with Co at RT at the same side as the cavity-generating He atoms, the Mossbauer spectra reveal two new quadrupole split components after 30 min annealing at 700°C. We present arguments for the tentative identification of these to a cavity edge site (79%, strong bonding) and to a cavity plane site (21%, weak bonding).
