In response to the thread of environmental and ecological degradation along with projected fossil fuel depletion the active search for efficient renewable energy conversion technologies has been attempted in various research areas including the field of thermoelectrics. Despite the availability of considerable amounts of waste and natural heat stored in warm fluids (<250 °C) a lack of environmentally friendly materials with high natural abundance, low manufacturing cost and high thermoelectric efficiency impedes the widespread use of thermoelectric generators for energy harvesting on a large scale. In this perspective, we examine the possibility of using organic conducting polymers in thermoelectric applications. We provide an overview of the background and the key concepts of organic thermoelectrics and illustrate some of the first prototypes of polymer-based organic thermoelectric generators.

Mixtures of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) and polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) have high electrical conductivity when cast from aqueous suspensions in combination with a high boiling-point cosolvent dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The electronic component of the thermal conductivity of these highly conducting polymers is of interest for evaluating their potential for thermoelectric cooling and power generation. We find, using time-domain thermore- flectance measurements of thermal conductivity along multiple directions of thick (>20 μm) drop-cast PEDOT films, that the thermal conductivity can be highly anisotropic (Λ∥ ≈ 1.0 W m −1 K −1 and Λ⊥ ≈ 0.3 W m −1 K −1 for the in-plane and through- plane directions, respectively) when the electrical conductivity in the in-plane direction is large (σ ≈ 500 S cm −1 ). We relate the increase in thermal conductivity to the estimated electronic component of the thermal conductivity using the Wiedemann−Franz law, and find that our data are consistent with conventional Sommerfeld value of the Lorenz number. We use measurements of the elastic constants (C11 ≈ 11 GPa and C44 ≈ 17 GPa) of spin-cast PEDOT films and through-plane thermal conductivity (Λ⊥ ≈ 0.3 W m −1 K −1 ) of drop-cast and spin-cast films to support our assumption that the phonon contribution to the thermal conductivity does not change significantly with DMSO composition.

Thermal Conductivity and Elastic Constants of PEDOT:PSS with High Electrical Conductivity

Measuring thermal properties of materials is not only of fundamental importance in understanding the transport processes of energy carriers (electrons and phonons in solids) but also of practical interest in developing novel materials with desired thermal properties for applications in energy conversion and storage, electronics, and photonic systems. Over the past two decades, ultrafast laser-based time-domain thermoreflectance (TDTR) has emerged and evolved as a reliable, powerful, and versatile technique to measure the thermal properties of a wide range of bulk and thin film materials and their interfaces. This tutorial discusses the basics as well as the recent advances of the TDTR technique and its applications in the thermal characterization of a variety of materials. The tutorial begins with the fundamentals of the TDTR technique, serving as a guideline for understanding the basic principles of this technique. Several variations of the TDTR technique that function similarly as the standard TDTR but with their own unique features are introduced, followed by introducing different advanced TDTR configurations that were developed to meet different measurement conditions. This tutorial closes with a summary that discusses the current limitations and proposes some directions for future development.

Tutorial: Time-domain thermoreflectance (TDTR) for thermal property characterization of bulk and thin film materials

We use time-domain thermoreflectance (TDTR), and the generation and detection of longitudinal and surface acoustic waves, to study the thermal conductivity, heat capacity, and elastic properties of thin films of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), polyacrylamide (PAM), poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP), methyl cellulose (MC), poly(4-styrenesulfonic acid) (PSS), poly(N-acryloylpiperidine) (PAP), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and a polymer blend of PVA/PAA. The thermal conductivity of six water-soluble polymers in the dry state varies by a factor of ≈2, from 0.21 to 0.38 W m–1 K–1, where the largest values appear among polymers with a high concentration of hydrogen bonding (PAA, PAM, PSS). The longitudinal elastic constants range from 7.4 to 24.5 GPa and scale linearly with the shear elastic constants, suggesting a narrow distribution of Possion’s ratio 0.35 < ν < 0.40. Thermal Conductivity, Heat Capacity, and Elastic Constants of Water-Soluble Polymers and Polymer Blends

The thermal conductivity of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and borosilicate crown glass BK7 has been studied. The transient hot-wire technique has been employed, and measurements cover a temperature range from room temperature up to 350 K for PMMA and up to 500 K for BK7. The technique is applied here in a novel way that minimizes all remaining thermal-contact resistances. This allows the apparatus to operate in an absolute way and with very low uncertainty. The method makes use of a soft silicone paste material between the hot wires and the solid under test. Measurements of the transient temperature rise of the wires in response to an electrical heating step over a period of 20 μs up to 5 s allow an absolute determination of the thermal conductivity of the solid, as well as of the silicone paste. The method is based on a full theoretical model with equations solved by a two-dimensional finite-element method applied to the exact geometry. At the 95% confidence level, the standard deviations of the thermal conductivity measurements are 0.09% for PMMA and 0.16% for BK7, whereas the standard uncertainty of the technique is less than 1.5%.
