New Trends in E-Science: Machine Learning and Knowledge Discovery in Databases

Italian center for Astronomical Archives (IA2, http://ia2.oats.inaf.it) is a national infrastructure project of the
Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (Istituto Nazionale di AstroFisica, INAF) that provides services for
the astronomical community. Besides data hosting for the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) Corporation, the
Galileo National Telescope (Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, TNG) Consortium and other telescopes and instruments,
IA2 offers proprietary and public data access through user portals (both developed and mirrored) and
deploys resources complying the Virtual Observatory (VO) standards. Archiving systems and web interfaces are
developed to be extremely flexible about adding new instruments from other telescopes. VO resources publishing,
along with data access portals, implements the International Virtual Observatory Alliance (IVOA) protocols
providing astronomers with new ways of analyzing data. Given the large variety of data flavours and IVOA standards,
the need for tools to easily accomplish data ingestion and data publishing arises. This paper describes
the VO-Dance tool, that IA2 started developing to address VO resources publishing in a dynamical way from
already existent database tables or views. The tool consists in a Java web application, potentially DBMS and
platform independent, that stores internally the services' metadata and information, exposes restful endpoints to
accept VO queries for these services and dynamically translates calls to these endpoints to SQL queries coherent
with the published table or view. In response to the call VO-Dance translates back the database answer in a VO
compliant way.

Stellar Astrophysics and in particular stellar evolutionary computations are extremely important to face a wealth of astrophysical problems, but they are also extremely demanding in terms of computing power and data storage. The Bag of Stellar Tracks and Isochrones (BaSTI) database is a theoretical astrophysical catalogue that collects fundamental data sets involving stars formation and evolution. To create this database it is necessary to run a large number of stellar evolutionary computations. The Grid technology seems to be a promising answer to data storage and processing needs of the BaSTI catalogue. In the framework of the EGEE Grid infrastructure, we managed to run a number of experiments aimed at designing and defining an application specific environment for the stellar simulation software and its interaction with the BaSTI database. Our successful implementation demonstrates that the “gridification” of stellar evolution code is not only possible but also even extremely convenient in terms of data processing speed and data sharing, and it can be a valuable instrument to support Astrophysical research.

Once the data output of a numerical simulation is stored and ingested into a database a web interface can be implemented to allow the end user to explore it. The VO idea is to handle the data directly on the server side leaving the user only with the results of the query, or other end products, on his own machine. This means providing services to let the user preview and analyze data and metadata (both generated on-the-fly or pre-computed) where the computing is performed on the server and only the results are visualized on the user desktop (or sent to him). Here we present an example as implemented on the IA2-ITVO archive web interface.

We have created a database structure to store the metadata of different types of cosmological simulations (Gadget, Enzo, FLY) and the first relational database for stellar evolution models BaSTI, it includes tracks and isochrones computed with the FRANEC code. We are also studying the feasibility of including different sets of theory data and services in the Virtual Observatory (VObs). Some examples of services are: the calculation onthe-fly of the profiles of some quantities for the simulated galaxy clusters, the preview of the object image opened with a VObs tool and retrieve a VOTable standard format. Furthermore, the BaSTI database development is the use case for studying the feasibility of storing in it the output of new simulations performed using the Grid infrastructure as demonstrating in the VO-DCA WP5, EU funded project. All that could be matter of discussion between the tool developers and the users, the scientists.

For archiving and publishing theoretical data it is important to create a suitable structure to store the metadata of the simulation (that must contain all the code parameters used to perform the run) and also all the physical parameters used and at the end also the metadata of the output files; so the database has to contain all the values to rebuilt the production history of a single file. The database must be a relational one in order to permit scientific query on selected parameters to obtain a restrict result. We present the work made for two kinds of astrophysical simulations: cosmological one that contain Gadget, Enzo and Fly simulations and stellar tracks and isochrones performed with the FRANEC code. These two experiences are made inside the VOTECH and VO-DCA EU funded projects.
