This study seeks to understand how bamboo maintains its stability while being lightweight and flexible in strong winds, with the aim of applying the findings to develop an engineering tube that mimics bamboo’s unique structural properties. Initially, image processing revealed convex distribution along the radial direction of the fiber sheath area between bamboo nodes, which was further analyzed to examine its impact on the bending properties of bamboo. Subsequently, a new bionic tube with gradient multi-cells (BTGCs) was introduced, and its crashworthiness was investigated using the Simplified Super Folding Element (SSFE) theory to establish a theoretical model. Additionally, the influence of the structural parameters of BTGCs on its crashworthiness under different loading angles was investigated in silico. The optimal basic design parameters were selected by using the complex proportional evaluation (COPRAS) method, and a Pareto front set of bionic design parameters and impact angles was obtained using artificial neural network (ANN) and non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II). The results indicated that the optimized BTGCs demonstrated superior crashworthiness compared to conventional circular and bi-layer tubes with an equal mass. This study can serve as a reference for designing highly-efficient bionic tubes. 

Crashworthiness design and optimization of bamboo-inspired tube with gradient multi-cells

The combination of metallic thin-walled structures and foam aluminum with lightweight characteristics and high energy absorption can further improve the crashworthiness of hollow homogenized structures. A novel tri-functional gradient (TFG) hierarchical thin-walled structure to simultaneously improve lightweight and crashworthiness is proposed, which is an aluminum-foam-filled hierarchical structure with functional gradient strength and thickness properties. Three characterized indices including the thickness index m, density index n, and strength index p are introduced to analyze the crashworthiness of TFG structure. The experimental results show that the crashworthiness of the TFG structure is superior to the uniform functional gradient (UFG) structure. The peak crushing force (PCF) and specific energy absorption (SEA) of TFG structure can reach 133kN and 19.903 kJ/kg, SEA is improved by 13.71% and PCF is reduced by 40.36%. Besides, the thickness and strength of the external tube is the primary factor affecting the PCF. The crashworthiness of the TFG structure is highly dependent on the synergistic combination of three gradient indices. When the combination of (m, n, p) is (0.25, 0.25, 0.25), the maximum SEA is 21.206 kJ/kg. The thickness and strength indices m, n have a large effect on SEA and PCF, yet the density index n has barely any effect on SEA and PCF. Furthermore, the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) is employed to build the optimal Pareto frontier aim at this TFG structure to realize a coupled material-function-structure multi-objective optimal design. 

Crashworthiness analysis and optimization of multi-functional gradient foam-aluminum filled hierarchical thin-walled structures

Numerical simulation and theoretical analysis of the crashworthiness of a tree-like hierarchical multicellular bi-tube

As a typical energy-absorbing structure, the thin-walled structure dissipates impact energy through the formation of plastic hinges and material failure. The geometric configuration of the energy-absorbing structure deeply influences its response to impact loads. For a certain load curve required by collision scenarios, this study proposes a novel design method for approximating a continuous impact load curve with discretized ones. Based on kirigami structures, the conceptual framework integrates multi-module and multi-stage designs to regulate segmental stiffness through theoretical analysis, thereby achieving the desired curve approximation. The effectiveness of the proposed kirigami-based multi-stage energy absorption structure (KMS) is validated by drop-weight impact tests and numerical simulations. Findings demonstrate that the KMS effectively dissipates impact energy in a progressive manner, aligning with the desired load curve and inducing stable and orderly structural deformation under axial impact. Through appropriate parameter design, the deformation mode and the inducing effect of the kirigami structure can be managed, enabling the structure's adaptability to diverse collision scenarios. 

Experiments and design of a kirigami-based multi-stage energy absorption structure subjected to axial impact

Self-supporting lattice structures (s-LS) have shown great potential in various applications such as energy absorption. However, conventional s-LS designs solely rely on uniform structural configurations, limiting their mechanical properties. In this study, we present gradient lattice structures (GLS) by incorporating a size-graded design strategy. Both bending- and stretching-dominated GLS are fabricated using the Selective Laser Melting (SLM) technique. A comprehensive investigation of their mechanical properties, failure modes, and energy absorption is conducted under both quasi static and dynamic impact loading. It is observed that the stretching-dominated GLS exhibits significantly higher load-carrying capacity and energy absorption efficiency compared to the bending-dominated GLS. The gradient design enabled GLS to manifest different internal stress distribution, deformation processes, and failure modes in response to loadings. Furthermore, GLS also displays significant strain-rate dependent mechanical behavior, leading to improved energy absorption efficiency while maintaining a high material utilization rate. Our gradient-based design strategy may pave the way for more applications in energy absorption using lattice structures. 

Static and dynamic mechanical behavior of self-supporting lattice with symmetric gradients

Axial crushing of tubes with multiple patterns of cut-outs is studied using numerical analysis. Commercially available finite element ABAQUS/Explicit® package is used to simulate the model under impact loading condition. Split-Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) is modelled to dynamically test the tube specimens with and without cut-outs. Number, size, and shape of cut-outs are kept constant in all specimens to have a constant weight reduction. In order to improve the crashworthiness characteristics of tubes, cut-outs are arranged on a tube surface along the circumferential and longitudinal direction in multiple rows. Crashworthiness parameters i.e., peak and mean collapse load, crushing efficiency, energy absorption characteristics are studied. The results revealed that a moderate weight reduction of tube can significantly affect the crushing characteristics of tube. In terms of load characteristic values, only 1% of weight reduction in modified tube samples has helped in 4.46% peak load reduction as compared to the normal tube, and crushing efficiency of the modified tube (T2) is found to be 2.17% higher than normal tube (T). In terms of energy absorption characteristic values, 1% of weight reduction in modified tube samples has helped in 1.95% reduction in energy absorption capacity as compared to the normal tube, and energy efficiency of modified tube (T2) is found to be 2.56% higher than the normal tube (T). After arranging the cut-outs in a multiple pattern, the location of cut-out is also seen to be influencing on the tube behaviour. It helps the tube to reduce the initial peak collapse load and optimize the mean collapse load. Further, force–deformation characteristics are also discussed to improve the crashworthiness characteristics of tube under impact load. • SHPB helps to understand the real-life impact force condition. • Cut-outs on a tube surface affects the progressive buckling of tube. • Diamond cut-outs in multiple row pattern are found to be more effective. • Longitudinal cut-out arrangement is predominant than circumferential arrangement. • Force–displacement characteristics can be improved by using different cut-out sizes.

Study of Effect of Provision of Cut-outs on Axial Collapse Behaviour of Circular Aluminium Tubes

Deformation mode of cylindrical shells and their peak load reduction is of prime importance in impact damage mechanics. In this study, numerical investigation is carried out for triggering mechanism induced in the thin-walled axially compressed short stubby shells, considering the damage occurred in vehicle crash or in any other protective equipment. The shells are studied for their initial buckling response under varying impact velocities for two different triggering configurations. Explicit simulation is carried out using ABAQUS/Explicit® to study the initial buckling of the shells by modelling Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) test setup. Initially, numerical scheme is validated using previously available study. Present analysis is carried out using diamond shaped triggering notches and these are configured in such a way that the shell will deform in particular buckling mode, under the impact of three different velocities i.e. 9 m/s, 20 m/s and 40 m/s. Effect of these notches and their pattern of arrangement on reduction in peak load and energy absorption characteristics are studied. Moreover, comparison is made between commonly used circular hole and diamond notch type cut-outs, in order to study the effect of above said parameters along with the energy absorbed, energy efficiency and specific energy absorption for the shells considered herein. By numerically impacting the shells in SHPB, it is observed that peak load reduction is higher in diamond notched shells as compared to circular hole shells. This was due to the geometry and size of the cut-outs considered in this study. Parameters like peak collapse load, energy absorbed, energy efficiency along with stress concentration around the notch are also observed and studied in this work in order to observe and compare the two shapes of cut-outs.
