Development of wear resistant carbidic austempered ductile iron (CADI)

Austempered ductile iron (ADI) is a heat-treated nodular iron variant that has for a given strength level much higher elongation than conventional iron with spheroidized graphite. This paper considers the effect of niobium addition on the graphite microstructure, bainite microstructure, bainite transformation process and properties such as hardness and impact toughness under given heat-treatment conditions. The resulting properties are significant with regard to the wear resistance of the material. The effects of niobium addition on the graphite morphology can be understood based on a detailed precipitation analysis of the niobium precipitation behavior in the liquid phase. Niobium influences the temperature and kinetics of pearlite as well as bainite transformation. Furthermore, niobium refines the bainite microstructure generated during austempering treatment. It was found that niobium addition in the range of 0.2–0.5 wt percent allows obtaining an optimum combination of hardness, impact toughness and wear resistance.

Effects of niobium alloying on microstructure, toughness and wear resistance of austempered ductile iron

The microsegregation of Mn, Cu, Cr, Mo, Ni and Si has been measured in cast ductile iron and in ductile iron which has been quenched when partially solidified. Effective segregation coefficients have been determined for each of the elements, and used to calculate the segregation on the basis of the Scheil equation. The calculated values agree reasonably well with the values of the solute concentration as a function of the solid fraction measured in quenched samples. The microstructure of the solid phases during the solidification of ductile iron has been observed. Solidification of eutectic ductile iron begins with the independent nucleation of austenite and graphite in the melt. Later the graphite nodules are enveloped by austenite, and further solidification takes place by the thickening of the austenite layers enveloping the graphite. Isolated pockets of interdendritic melt are the last material to solidify. On the basis of the measured segregation of the different alloying elements, the mechanisms by which the segregation affects the microstructure are considered, and an explanation for the effect of segregation on the hardenability of ductile iron is proposed. A mathematical model of the solidification of eutectic ductile iron is formulated which includes heat flow, nucleation and growth of graphite nodules, and the segregation of Si. On the Problems with Carbide Formation in Gray Cast Iron

Interest in austempered bainitic ductile irons has increased dramatically in the past few years as more and more successful applications are being reported. The remarkable combination of properties attainable has caused this material to emerge as a new class of ductile iron. Austempered ductile irons achieve strength levels as high as twice those of standard ductile iron grades at the same level of toughness and ductility, see Figure 1. In addition they respond to work-hardening treatments at the surface and thus have exceptionally high bending fatigue strength and wear resistance. These good properties are directly related to the unique bainite-austenite microstructure produced by austempering.
