Ontario Hydro is considering the use of fibre optic ground wire (OPGW) in its EHV transmission system. To assist in the selection of an appropriate OPGW, laboratory tests on three different OPGW's from two manufacturers were performed. These tests were; 1) Static Tension Test, ii) Strain Margin Test, iii) Creep Test, iv) Aeolian Vibration Test, v) Galloping Test, vi) Fatigue Test on Aluminum Core Tube, vii) Electrical Short Circuit Test, viii) Visual Inspection and ix) Other Tests. The manufacturers were responsible for the static tension test, the strain margin test, the creep test and other tests. Ontario Hydro performed the aeolian vibration test, galloping test, fatigue test on aluminum core tube and the electric short circuit test. This paper describes the test set-up, procedures, instrumentation and results of the aeolian vibration, galloping and fatigue tests. The manufacturer's tests are briefly described however, detailed documentation is provided in an Ontario Hydro Research Division Report. The electrical short circuit tests are described in a paper by Madge et al, submitted to IEEE for presentation at the PES 1989 Winter Meeting. The purpose of the aeolian vibration test was to determine the high cycle fatigue performance of the OPGW and the performance of the optical fibres under relatively small peakto-peak amplitude and high frequency. The purpose of the galloping test was to determine the low cycle fatigue performance of the OPGW and the performance of the optical fibres under vibration of relatively large peak-to-peak amplitude and low frequency.

Mechanical evaluation of composite fibre optic ground wires

OPGW optical cable is an important part of the power communication system, its common faults are relatively more, which will directly affect the safety performance of power grid operation. Therefore, the staff should take effective operation and maintenance methods to ensure that the OPGW optical cable is in a normal operation state. This paper briefly describes the common faults of OPGW optical cable, analyzes the critical point, management mode, specific operation and maintenance contents and methods of OPGW optical cable operation and maintenance.

Fault Analysis and Diagnosis Method for Intelligent Maintenance of OPGW Optical Cable in Power Systems

Assumptions concerning span length and termination procedures in fault current testing of optical ground wires are examined. Peak component temperatures were measured for both 10 m and 60 m spans. The cable temperature decay time was measured and is compared with a numerical model of convection and conduction losses. A numerical model is developed to predict the peak cable tension following a hit. This model can be used to establish appropriate initial cable tensions to simulate full-span faults. The issue of dynamic stresses in the form of cable whipping is reviewed. Various cable termination procedures were tested. >

Considerations for fault current testing of optical ground wire

The effects of lightning and impulse currents on the perturbations of the state of polarization (SOP) of optical beams transmitted on aerial cables are emulated in a laboratory environment. Submicrosecond-resolved measurements enable us to distinguish and quantify the magnetooptic contributions due to the discharge current. The maximum of Faraday-induced circular birefringence associated to natural strokes is estimated in /spl Delta/n/sub lr//spl ap/10/sup -7/ and may lead in a few microseconds to iterate swapping between orthogonal SOPs. The corresponding peak in relative phase delay, cumulated in transmission along a span, is evaluated as /spl Delta//spl tau//sub lr//spl ap/0.3 ps.

Fast polarization effects in optical aerial cables caused by lightning and impulse current

Optical ground wires (OPGW) must be able to fulfil the regular functions of a ground wire, such as lighting protection and fault current path, as well as provide secure communications by way of the optical fibers embedded inside. Fault current tests were performed on a loose-tube-design OPGW to evaluate the temperature and optical performance during and after fault current pulses or hits. Optical performance was found to be affected as early as the first rated fault current hit. Temperature gradient tests revealed much higher than expected optical core temperatures, with resultant buffer tube damage. A computer program for predicting the temperature gradient was developed and independently verified the measured temperatures. A redesign of the cable will be necessary to ensure adequate optical performance for rated fault current hits. >
