Background: Medicinal plants are superior gift of nature to human lives to support disease free healthy life. Neurodegenerative diseases especially Alzheimer’s disease (AD) affects the central nervous system causing progressive degeneration of neurons, which affect cognitive function. The plant Asparagus racemosus (AR) Linn. has been used traditionally by Ayurvedic practitioners for nervous disorders. In this consequence, the intention of this study was to evaluate the neuroprotective effects of ethanolic extract of Asparagus racemosus (EEAR) Linn. roots in ethanol-induced cognitive impairment and oxidative stress in rats brain. Methods: The learning and memory enhancing activity of EEAR roots extract were investigated in Swiss albino male rats for 21 days and its effects on learning and memory were examined using various behavioral studies such as elevated plus maze (EPM) test, passive avoidance (PA) test, morris water maze (MWM) test, novel object recognition (NOR) test and biochemical studies such as lipid peroxidation (TBARS) contents and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity. Results: In the EPM test, administration of EEAR (i.e., 100 and 200 mg/kg b.w.) significantly (P<0.05, P<0.01) decreased retention transfer latency (RTL) on 21st day with respect to the disease control group. EEAR at 200 mg/kg b.w. markedly (P<0.05, P<0.01) increased the retention latency (RL) on 11th and 21st day compared to disease control group for PA test. In the NOR test administration of EEAR (i.e., 200 mg/kg b.w.) considerably (P<0.05) increased DI of rats on 21st day with respect to disease control group. Both doses of EEAR (i.e., 100 and 200 mg/kg b.w.) markedly (P<0.05, P<0.01) decreased escape latency (EL) and highest dose of EEAR (i.e., 200 mg/kg b.w.) noticeably (P<0.05, P<0.001) increased time spent in the target quadrant (TSTQ) on successive days for acquisition trial of MWM test. In case of probe trial administration of EEAR (i.e., 200 mg/kg b.w.) considerably (P<0.05, P<0.01) increased TSTQ and TSA (time spent in the annuli) of rats as compared to that of disease control group. EEAR administration (i.e., 100 and 200 mg/kg b.w.) significantly (P<0.01) decreased the TBARS level in the brain tissue of rats with respect to disease control group. The lowest and highest dose of EEAR (i.e., 100 and 200 mg/kg b.w.) significantly (P<0.05, P<0.01) decreases the AChE activity in the brain tissue of rats as compared to disease control group. Conclusion: The existing study displays that EEAR roots possesses an outstanding source for natural nootropic and confirming the traditional uses of this plant which could be industrialized for enhancing learning and memory impairment associated with neurodegenerative disorders particularly AD.

Neuro-nutraceutical potential of Asparagus racemosus: A review

Asparagus root (AR) is utilized globally as a traditional herbal medicine because it contains various bioactive compounds, such as polyphenols, flavonoids, saponins, and minerals. The composition profiles of AR are strongly affected by its botanical and geographical origins. Although minerals and heavy metals are minor constituents of AR, they play a crucial role in determining its quality and efficacy. A comprehensive classification of AR, its phytochemistry, and its pharmacology were reviewed and interpreted herein. Potentially eligible articles (in English) were identified through an electronic search of the Web of Science database (2010–2022) and Google (2001–2022). We used the primary search term “Asparagus roots” combined with the words “pharmacology,” “bioactive compounds,” “physicochemical properties,” and “health benefits” to find the relevant literature. We screened the titles, keywords, and abstracts of the publications obtained from the database. A full copy of the article was obtained for further assessment if deemed appropriate. Different asparagus species might potentially be used as herbal medicines and functional foods. Phytochemical studies have revealed the presence of various bioactive compounds as valuable secondary metabolites. The dominant class of bioactive compounds in AR is flavonoids. Furthermore, AR displayed significant pharmacological effects, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiviral, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and antidiabetic effects, as shown in animal and human studies. This review provides a valuable resource to enable a thorough assessment of the profile of Asparagus root as a functional ingredient for the pharmaceutical and food industries. In addition, it is anticipated that this review will provide information to healthcare professionals seeking alternative sources of critical bioactive compounds.

Literature analysis on asparagus roots and review of its functional characterizations

The present review gives an account of various bioactive molecules obtained from Indian medicinal plants for neurological degenerative disorders. Emphasis is laid on their correlation with the plants used in traditional system of medicine in India. The methodology involved in present review was enlisting of medicinal plants used for neurodegenerative disorders followed by their chemistry. A correlation with the chemical constituents and their recent findings has been done. Many medicinal plants such as Aloe vera and Bacopa monnieri have documented correlations and also need to be explored more. Molecules like garcinol (34), which was originally an anticancer compound, have good correlation as neuroprotective agent. Likewise many plants that have not been explored but are used in traditional system of medicine have also been listed. Jaggery and honey, which are used in traditional formulations in large quantity, also have natural products that are used as neuroprotective agents. In conclusion, a lot more study is required to correlate the medicinal plants and herbal formulations to have much more natural products for neurodegenerative disorders.

Two bulk Winchcombe along with six other CM2 meteorite samples were subjected to quantitative evolved gas analysis. The observed release patterns for almost all volatile species demonstrate close similarity for all the samples and especially between those for Winchcombe. This can be considered as a fingerprint for this petrological type of meteorites. We identified several gases including H2, H2O, O2, CO, CO2, and SO2 released in different temperature ranges. The sources and mechanisms of their release were also established. Some of the gases, H2, CO, and CO2, are released as a result of oxidation of macromolecular organic material from oxygen derived from oxygen-bearing minerals (a part of CO2 is also released as a result of decomposition of carbonates). The others, O2 and H2O, are associated with the phase transformation/decomposition of phyllosilicates and (oxy)hydrates, while a high-temperature release of SO2 is associated mostly with the decomposition of sulfides and in few cases also with sulfates. A low-temperature release of SO2 is due to evaporation and oxidation of elemental sulfur from the meteoritic matrix and organic material. The total concentrations of H (mostly represented by H2O), C, and S, calculated according to calibration of the quadrupole mass spectrometer with reference gases and decomposition of solid samples (CaSO4 2H2O and NaHCO3) are in reasonable agreement with those determined by independent methods. Variations in the ratio of the carbon amounts released as CO2 and CO (CCO2/CCO) between the samples could be an indicator of their terrestrial weathering.

Neuroprotective effects of the root extract of Asparagus racemosus were studied both in animal models and clinical patients. Swiss albino mice were used for the study. Mice were subjected to 3 hrs unpredictable swim stress daily up to 30days to develop region specific neurodegeneration (Shukla, 2000). Separate group of animals were given 100mg/kg BW dose of Aracemosus root extract daily up to 30 days, orally. Histological and behavioural studies ( open field test and passive avoidance test ) were carried out. For clinical study , registered patients both male and female of approximately similar age groups, for cognitive disorders at local Ayurvedic hospital were selected. These were subjected to memory retention and recall test. Cytological studies demonstrated that total normal cell count in various regions of hippocampus (CA1, CA3, CA4 and Dg) was significantly high in stress + extract group as compared to stress group and was comparable to control group. Percentage of hippocampal cell degeneration in stress and treated groups observed in our study is ranked in following order -CA3> Dg>CAl>CA4 as compared to control.
