Two-dimensional graphene offers interesting electronic, thermal, and mechanical properties that are currently being explored for advanced electronics, membranes, and composites. Here we synthesize and explore the biological applications of nano-graphene oxide (NGO), i.e., single-layer graphene oxide sheets down to a few nanometers in lateral width. We develop functionalization chemistry in order to impart solubility and compatibility of NGO in biological environments. We obtain size separated pegylated NGO sheets that are soluble in buffers and serum without agglomeration. The NGO sheets are found to be photoluminescent in the visible and infrared regions. The intrinsic photoluminescence (PL) of NGO is used for live cell imaging in the near-infrared (NIR) with little background. We found that simple physisorption via π-stacking can be used for loading doxorubicin, a widely used cancer drug onto NGO functionalized with antibody for selective killing of cancer cells in vitro. Owing to its small size, intrinsic optical properties, large specific surface area, low cost, and useful non-covalent interactions with aromatic drug molecules, NGO is a promising new material for biological and medical applications.

Nano-Graphene Oxide for Cellular Imaging and Drug Delivery

Monostructured single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are important in both scientific research and electronic and biomedical applications; however, the bulk separation of SWCNTs into populations of single-chirality nanotubes remains challenging. Here we report a simple and effective method for the large-scale chirality separation of SWCNTs using a single-surfactant multicolumn gel chromatography method utilizing one surfactant and a series of vertically connected gel columns. This method is based on the structure-dependent interaction strength of SWCNTs with an allyl dextran-based gel. Overloading an SWCNT dispersion on the top column results in the adsorption sites of the column becoming fully occupied by the nanotubes that exhibit the strongest interaction with the gel. The unbound nanotubes flow through to the next column, and the nanotubes with the second strongest interaction with the gel are adsorbed in this stage. In this manner, 13 different (n, m) species were separated. Metallic SWCNTs were finally collected as unbound nanotubes because they exhibited the lowest interaction with the gel.

Carbon-based nanomaterials for removal of chemical and biological contaminants from water: A review of mechanisms and applications

The reaction mechanism of α-MnO2 having 2×2 tunnel structure with zinc ions in a zinc rechargeable battery, employing an aqueous zinc sulfate electrolyte, was investigated by in situ monitoring structural changes and water chemistry alterations during the reaction. Contrary to the conventional belief that zinc ions intercalate into the tunnels of α-MnO2, we reveal that they actually precipitate in the form of layered zinc hydroxide sulfate (Zn4(OH)6(SO4)⋅5 H2O) on the α-MnO2 surface. This precipitation occurs because unstable trivalent manganese disproportionates and is dissolved in the electrolyte during the discharge process, resulting in a gradual increase in the pH value of the electrolyte. This causes zinc hydroxide sulfate to crystallize from the electrolyte on the electrode surface. During the charge process, the pH value of the electrolyte decreases due to recombination of manganese on the cathode, leading to dissolution of zinc hydroxide sulfate back into the electrolyte. An analogous phenomenon is also observed in todorokite, a manganese dioxide polymorph with 3×3 tunnel structure that is an indication for the critical role of pH changes of the electrolyte in the reaction mechanism of this battery system.

Critical Role of pH Evolution of Electrolyte in the Reaction Mechanism for Rechargeable Zinc Batteries

Stable, homogeneous, aqueous dispersions of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are prepared by nonspecific physical adsorption of surfactants enhanced by sonication. Upon centrifugation, supernatant and precipitate phases are obtained. The initial weights of the SWNTs and the surfactant are divided between these two phases, and the respective SWNT concentration in each phase is unknown. The focus of this work is on the determination of the true concentration of raw, exfoliated HiPCO SWNTs in the supernatant phase. A UV−visible absorption-based approach is suggested for a direct measurement of the SWNT and the surfactant concentration in the supernatant. UV−visible absorbance spectra of SWNTs−surfactant dispersions and surfactants alone reveal that the intensity of a certain peak, attributed to the π-plasmon resonance absorption, is unaffected by the presence of most surfactants.
