A technique is provided for reducing the number of write barriers executed in mutator code without compromising garbage collector performance. Advantageously, a compiler generates two forms of a mutator code—a first version with write barriers and a second version substantially without write barriers. In operation, the first version of the code may be accessed by a vtable in a “mature” near-class and the second version may be accessed by a vtable in a “nascent” near-class. According to the invention, mapping of functionally equivalent points in the first and second versions of the mutator code may be facilitated by an associated pcmap. Further, each of the first and second versions may also be associated with a respective nr_map that facilitates mapping functionally equivalent points within different branches of guard code sequences corresponding to reference-writes to non-receiver objects.

Specializing write-barriers for objects in a garbage collected heap

A method and mechanism is disclosed for implementing transaction logging in a database system. In-memory undo records are maintained to log undo information for the database system. Redo records are batch processed, with multiple redo records for a transaction stored on disk at commit time.

Method and mechanism for batch processing transaction logging records

In practice, any database management system sometimes needs reorganization, that is, a change in some aspect of the logical and/or physical arrangement of a database. In traditional practice, many types of reorganization have required denying access to a database (taking the database offline) during reorganization. Taking a database offline can be unacceptable for a highly available (24-hour) database, for example, a database serving electronic commerce or armed forces, or for a very large database. A solution is to reorganize online (concurrently with usage of the database, incrementally during users' activities, or interpretively). This article is a tutorial and survey on requirements, issues, and strategies for online reorganization. It analyzes the issues and then presents the strategies, which use the issues. The issues, most of which involve design trade-offs, include use of partitions, the locus of control for the process that reorganizes (a background process or users' activities), reorganization by copying to newly allocated storage (as opposed to reorganizing in place), use of differential files, references to data that has moved, performance, and activation of reorganization. The article surveys online strategies in three categories of reorganization. The first category, maintenance, involves restoring the physical arrangement of data instances without changing the database definition. This category includes restoration of clustering, reorganization of an index, rebalancing of parallel or distributed data, garbage collection for persistent storage, and cleaning (reclamation of space) in a log-structured file system. The second category involves changing the physical database definition; topics include construction of indexes, conversion between B+ -trees and linear hash files, and redefinition (e.g., splitting) of partitions. The third category involves changing the logical database definition. Some examples are changing a column's data type, changing the inheritance hierarchy of object classes, and changing a relationship from one-to-many to many-to-many. The survey encompasses both research and commercial implementations, and this article points out several open research topics. As highly available or very large databases continue to become more common and more important in the world economy, the importance of online reorganization is likely to continue growing.

Online reorganization of databases

An administrative management system comprising an administrative server and a client is disclosed. In response to a selection of an administrative procedure to be executed on the client, the administrative server determines if an execution of the administrative procedure on the client is in compliance with one or more corresponding policies. If the execution is in compliance with the corresponding policy or policies, the administrative server determines the storage location of the administrative procedure. If the selected administrative procedure is stored on the client, the administrative server executes the administrative procedure on the client. If the selected administrative procedure is stored on the administrative server, the administrative server pushes a corresponding script of the administrative procedure from the administrative server to the client and then installs and executes the script on the client. If the selected administrative procedure is stored at a remote location, the administrative server pushes a corresponding script of the administrative procedure from the remote location to the client and then installs and executes the script on the client.

Dynamic, policy based management of administrative procedures within a distributed computing environment

The present invention provides techniques that allow concurrent collection of cyclic garbage on reference counting systems. In general, candidate objects are found that may be part of cyclic garbage. Each candidate object has a reference count. Two tests are performed to determine if concurrent operations have affected the reference counts of the candidate objects. If concurrent operations have not affected the reference counts, the candidate objects are collected as garbage. Additionally, during garbage collection, the decrements to reference counts are delayed so that increments occur before decrements and so that decrements are held a predetermined time before being applied. This prevents decrementing a reference and collecting a cycle as garbage right before a reference is added to an object in the cycle.

Concurrent Collection of Cyclic Garbage in Reference Counting Systems

Garbage collection is important in object-oriented databases to free the programmer from explicitly deallocating memory. In this paper, we present a garbage collection algorithm, called Transactional Cyclic Reference Counting (TCRC), for object-oriented databases. The algorithm is based on a variant of a reference-counting algorithm proposed for functional programming languages The algorithm keeps track of auxiliary reference count information to detect and collect cyclic garbage. The algorithm works correctly in the presence of concurrently running transactions, and system failures. It does not obtain any long-term locks, thereby minimizing interference with transaction processing. It uses recovery subsystem logs to detect pointer updates; thus, existing code need not be rewritten. Finally, it exploits schema information, if available, to reduce costs. We have implemented the TCRC algorithm and present results of a performance study of the implementation.
