The objective of this study was to assess the low temperature anti-cracking performance of crumb rubber modified asphalt mixtures by performing the semi-circular bending tests. The flexural tensile strength, fracture energy density, and fracture resistance were used to evaluate the rubber modified asphalt mixture's performance based on fracture mechanics J-integral concept. The semi-circular bending (SCB) tests were conducted to study the effect of crumb rubber dosage, crumb rubber size, and testing temperature on the low temperature anti-cracking performance of rubber modified asphalt mixtures. Two gradations (a dense gradation mixture and a gap-gradation mixture) were selected, and five rubber application dosages (15, 18, 20, 22, and 25 %, all by the weight of base binder) were studied in the paper. The tests were performed at temperatures of 0, −10, and −20°C. The testing results indicated that the flexural tensile strength and fracture energy density increased initially, reached to a peak point and then decreased with the increase of rubber dosage. Flexural tensile strength and fracture energy density reached its maximum value at the 20 % rubber dosage among the five rubber application dosages. The flexural tensile strength, fracture energy density, and the J-integral fracture toughness of the gap-graded rubber asphalt mixture specimens were higher than those of the dense gradation. The smaller sized particle rubber modified mixture provided a better low temperature anti-cracking performance as compared to those with bigger particle sizes. Through the comprehensive consideration of laboratory test results and field results, it was recommended that the J-integral fracture toughness should be no less than 2.8 KJ/m2 for new asphalt rubber pavement in Shannxi province.

Characterization of Low Temperature Crack Resistance of Crumb Rubber Modified Asphalt Mixtures Using Semi-Circular Bending Tests

The primary objective of this work is to characterize and compare the dynamic mechanical behavior of asphalt concrete mixes with styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) polymer and crumb rubber modified asphalt binders with the behavior of mixes with unmodified viscosity grade asphalt binders. Asphalt binders are characterized for their physical and rheological properties. Simple performance tests like dynamic modulus, dynamic and static creep tests are carried out at varying temperatures and time. Dynamic modulus master curves constructed using numerical optimization technique is used to explain the time and temperature dependency of modified and unmodified asphalt binder mixes. Creep parameters estimated through regression analysis explained the permanent deformation characteristics of asphalt concrete mixes. From the dynamic mechanical characterization studies, it is found that asphalt concrete mixes with SBS polymer modified asphalt binder showed significantly higher values of dynamic modulus and reduced rate of deformation at higher temperatures when compared to asphalt concrete mixes with crumb rubber and unmodified asphalt binders. From the concept of energy dissipation, it is found that SBS polymer modification substantially reduces the energy loss at higher temperatures. Multi-factorial analysis of variance carried out using generalized liner model showed that temperature, frequency and asphalt binder type significant influences the mechanical response of asphalt concrete mixes. The mechanical response of SBS polymer modified asphalt binders are significantly correlated with the rutting resistance of asphalt concrete mixes.

Dynamic mechanical characterization of asphalt concrete mixes with modified asphalt binders

The mixing temperature for binders is normally chosen by the pavement engineer based on a specific ‘viscosity’ required during hot mix asphalt production. Majority of the unmodified binders exhibit Newtonian behaviour at the mixing temperature and hence the determination of the same is straight-forward. However, when modified binders are used, experiments using a rotational viscometer indicate that the binder exhibits viscoelastic non-Newtonian fluid characteristic even at very high temperature. Consequently, the ‘viscosity’ varies with time and the location where it is measured, and hence is not a unique property of the material. Rheological characterisation of modified binders at mixing and compaction temperature

This paper presents the results of investigations on the rheological properties of modified asphalt binders and their influence on the performance of asphalt mixes. Asphalt mixes with modified binders such as styrene butadiene styrene polymer, crumb rubber, natural rubber, and waste plastics were evaluated for their rheological properties and compared to the properties of asphalt mixes with unmodified VG30 (viscosity grade) asphalt binder. The dynamic modulus values and rutting characteristics of the asphalt mixes were studied with due consideration to different levels of aging and temperature variations. Studies on the rheological properties showed that the energy dissipated by unmodified asphalt (VG30) binder is higher than that of modified asphalt binders. Long-term aged natural rubber and waste plastic modified asphalt binders showed significant increase in the properties compared to unmodified asphalt binder (VG30). Reduced temperature susceptibility of polymer modified asphalt binder showed that only polymer modification can enhance both high temperature rutting resistance and low temperature thermal cracking resistance of asphalt mixes. The transient nature of polymer modified asphalt mix from viscoelastic solid-like to viscoelastic fluid-like condition is significantly shifted to higher temperature compared to that of the mix with unmodified asphalt binder. Aging and rutting indices showed that rubber modified asphalt mixes are highly susceptible to aging. Statistical analysis of test results showed that the process of modification of asphalt binder, aging, and temperature during the test influence the rheological and rutting characteristics of asphalt mixes significantly. Correlation between the asphalt binder properties and its influence on the rutting resistance are found to be statistically significant. The analysis using least significant difference showed that polymer modified asphalt binder significantly improves the aging and rutting resistance of asphalt mixes compared to unmodified asphalt binder.

Rheological and Rutting Characterization of Asphalt Mixes with Modified Binders

In this work, pavement cross-section as stipulated by the Indian Roads Congress code of practice for pavement design was used in the stress-analysis. Typically, two types of asphalt layers are laid over three to four layers of granular materials for pavements constructed for heavy traffic volume in India. Asphalt mixtures pertaining to these top two layers were fabricated with polymer modified and unmodified asphalts in the laboratory. These mixes were tested in the simple performance test equipment at temperature of 60 °C under a wide range of frequencies. A four parameter Burgers' model was used for fitting the experimental data for both the asphalt layers. A two-dimensional finite element model of the pavement structure was used within the ABAQUS computing environment. The granular base, subbase and subgrade granular layers were assumed to be elastic. The pavement model was subjected to cycles of periodic loading and the stresses and strains were monitored at all the critical locations. This was used to quantify the influence of modifiers on the mechanical response of the pavement and parametric analysis was carried out to find out enhanced service life of the asphalt layers that could be achieved due to the use of high-performance materials.
