In the present study the thermal structure evolution is reviewed for known nonlinear optical borates such as β-BaB2O4, LiB3O5, CsLiB6O10, Li2B4O7, K2Al2B2O7, and α-BiB3O6, based on single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction data collected over wide temperature ranges. Temperature-dependent measurements of further borates are presented for the first time: α-BaB2O4 (295–673 K), β-BaB2O4 (98–693 K), LiB3O5 (98–650 K) and K2Al2B2O7 (98–348 K). In addition to the established criteria for nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of crystals, here the role of the anisotropy and anharmonicity of the thermal vibrations of atoms is analysed as well as changes in their coordination spheres and the anisotropy of the thermal expansion of the crystal structure. Non-centrosymmetric borates, especially those that have NLO properties, often show distinct anisotropies for each cation in comparison to centrosymmetric borates. All considered NLO borates contain BO3 triangles, which are the principal cause of the strong anisotropy of the thermal expansion.

 The EPR, optical absorption, transmission, and photoluminescence of un-doped glasses of the PbO-B2O3-GeO2-La2O3 and PbO-B2O3-SiO2-ZnO systems were studied Optical band gaps and Urbach energies for both glasses have been evaluated from fundamental absorption edge analysis The PbO-B2O3-GeO2-La2O3 glass upon UV photoexcitation shows broad emission, consisting of two intense overlapping bands peaked about 465 and 610 nm Excitation spectrum of the PbO-B2O3-GeO2-La2O3 glass show intense band peaked at 351 nm at monitoring of emission band at 465 nm that characterised by fast kinetics Luminescence decay curve for emission band at 610 nm, registered upon excitation at 357 nm, were best fitted by two-exponential approximation with lifetimes in microsecond range In the PbO-B2O3-GeO2-La2O3 glass were proposed fast and slow recombination mechanisms for emission bands peaked about 465 and 610 nm The PbO-B2O3-SiO2-ZnO glass under excitation at 419 nm reveals only broad emission band peaked at 593 nm that characterised by fast kinetics

A time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy study of non-linear optical crystals K2Al2B2O7

This paper reports on a study of the dynamics of electronic excitations in KBe2BO3F2 (KBBF) crystals by low-temperature luminescent vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy with nanosecond time resolution under photoexcitation by synchrotron radiation. The first data have been obtained on the kinetics of photoluminescence (PL) decay, time-resolved PL spectra, time-resolved PL excitation spectra, and reflection spectra at 7 K; the estimation has been performed for the band gap Eg = 10.6−11.0 eV; the predominantly excitonic mechanism for PL excitation at 3.88 eV has been identified; and defect luminescence bands at 3.03 and 4.30 eV have been revealed. The channels of generation and decay of electronic excitations in KBBF crystals have been discussed.

For the first time, the data have been obtained on the photoluminescence (PL) decay kinetics, PL spectra with time resolution, PL excitation spectra with time resolution, and reflection spectra at 7 K; the intrinsic nature of PL at 3.28 eV has been established; luminescence bands of defects have been separated in the visible and ultraviolet spectral regions; an intense long-wavelength PL band has been detected at 1.72 eV; channels of the formation and decay of electronic excitations in K2Al2B2O7 crystals have been discussed.
