Proportional-integral (PI) and sliding mode controls are combined to regulate a fourth-order Cuk converter in a continuous conduction mode. A closed-loop system is obtained with the aid of the equivalent control method. Based on the Routh-Hurwitz stability criterion and root locus, the appropriate PI gains are obtained and a stable and robust system suitable for large signal variations is achieved. The minimum or nonminimum phase behavior of the closed-loop system and the transients of the closed- loop system under step variations of various circuit parameters are analyzed. Under a wide range of operating points, the Cuk converter under the proposed controller has a load voltage tracking accuracy within ±0.05 V with a moderate maximum switching frequency of not greater than 100 KHz. The merits and demerits of the proposed controller are compared with some other controllers.

-factor approach and two different optimisation techniques (gravitational search algorithm and particle swarm optimisation) for obtaining better stability and performance for a closed loop DC-DC Switched mode boost converter. The closed loop control system has been implemented in real time dSPACE platform. The comparative closed-loop performances of a boost converter with classical, optimised PID and optimised type II/type III controllers have been produced. Simulations and experimental results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of optimised controllers for the proposed converter. Design and implementation of optimised type controller for switch mode converters has not been reported earlier in any literature.

Design and implementation of type-II and type-III controller for DC–DC switched-mode boost converter by using K -factor approach and optimisation techniques

This paper presents an improved interleaved boost converter (IBC) with optimal Type-III controller by utilizing voltage mode control. Due to the presence of several power switches in parallel path, the degree of freedom has been increased in IBC. Also, the IBC produces lower output voltage ripples, so the size and losses of the output filter can significantly be reduced compared with conventional BC. But due to the nonminimum phase problem of IBC, closed-loop bandwidth is restricted that causes slower converter dynamics. It is difficult for the conventional proportional-integral-differential controller to exhibit good performance with line, load changes, and parametric uncertainty. So an optimal Type-III controller is designed and implemented for achieving better closed-loop dynamic performance and stability. Initially, controller parameters have been designed by using the classical “k-factor” method, and then particle swarm optimization-based optimal Type-III controller is developed for the proposed IBC. The comparative closed-loop performances of BC and IBC with classical and optimal Type-III controllers have been presented. The proposed control scheme by utilizing the optimized Type-III controller in IBC is newly introduced in this paper and has not been reported earlier. The overall control circuit diagram using voltage-mode controlled two-phase IBC has been implemented by simple analog control circuit and the cost of complete experimental setup is very cheap. Simulation and experimental results have been produced to show the efficacy of the proposed converter control system.

An Improved Interleaved Boost Converter With PSO-Based Optimal Type-III Controller

In this paper, a particle swarm optimization (PSO)-based design of power stage components of a fourth-order dc–dc converters is presented. A low source current ripple fourth-order boost converter is analyzed and used the PSO algorithm for its energy storage elements design and optimization. Through time-domain analysis, state-space models are established, and then, discrete-time-domain transfer functions are formulated. The origin of an up–down glitch in the control-to-output transfer function and its implications on dynamics is addressed. A generalized optimization procedure, based on PSO, with a possibility to extend for other higher order topologies is proposed to resolve the contradictory issues of steady-state and dynamic performance requirements. A 12- to 28-V 30-W prototype converter is used to compare the steady-state and dynamic performance both in simulation and experiment. The distinct feature of low source current ripple of the converter and its PSO-based optimized design is experimentally demonstrated.

Control of Switched-Mode Boost Converter by using classical and optimized Type controllers

Nowadays DC-DC Converters are used for controlling and stabilizing DC voltages, feeding electric vehicles, telephone sets and industrial inverters. Recently improving the performance of the DC-DC converters is one of the goals of engineers in the industries and several control methods are used to control Buck converters. In this paper, PI and PID controllers are used to optimize the DC-DC converter performance. In order to obtain the best coefficients of the controllers, particle swarm optimization (PSO) method is applied. The results of simulation show the capability of the PSO method in designing an optimized PID controller which improves the performance of the above-mentioned converter.
