Lattice-based structures provide a means of encoding information. This inherent property of information representation is utilized to design a metaphor for visualizing and analyzing a program, based on the structured nature of disassembled executable code. Beginning from a generic platform’s Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) and abstracting the manner in which instructions are combined to form a program, a generic representation of the flow of a program is created. This representation is then mapped onto a lattice-based structure for visualization. Once the visualization is rendered, the lattice structure is used to analyze a program’s disassembled code in order to extract potentially useful information for decision making. Although many tools have been presented in the research literature of software visualization, there is little evidence of their adoption. To choose a suitable visualization tool, practitioners need to analyze various characteristics of tools such as their supported software concerns and level of maturity. Indeed, some tools can be prototypes for which the lifespan is expected to be short, whereas others can be fairly mature products that are maintained for a longer time. Although such characteristics are often described in papers, we conjecture that practitioners willing to adopt software visualizations require additional support to discover suitable visualization tools. In this paper, we elaborate on our efforts to provide such support. To this end, we systematically analyzed research papers in the literature of software visualization and curated a catalog of 70 available tools that employ various visualization techniques to support the analysis of multiple software concerns. We further encapsulate these characteristics in an ontology. VISON, our software visualization ontology, captures these semantics as concepts and relationships. We report on early results of usage scenarios that demonstrate how the ontology can support (i) developers to find suitable tools for particular development concerns, and (ii) researchers who propose new software visualization tools to identify a baseline tool for a controlled experiment.

Executable Code Analysis

Implementing a software system that is the solution of an open ended problem gives students the opportunity to use a variety of programming tools and practice a software engineering methodology. In this paper, we describe a course Graph Theory, Algorithms, and Software Engineering intended as an elective for second and third year students that has these opportunities as its learning objectives. The course is structured around the implementation of a visualization tool for use in explaining and demonstrating fundamental concepts and classical results of graph theory. Possible graph theory topics to be included in the tool are search techniques, Euler circuits, and minimal cost spanning trees. Many of the decisions about the project’s design and the topics covered are dependent on the students. As a result, the resulting tool can appear quite different from one offering to the next. The project is intended to be developed by one or more student groups with all groups using the same interface for the graphs and visualizations. Strict enforcement of interface usage allows the opportunity to teach many design patterns that will aid in seamless integration of the code developed by different groups. Additionally, user testing of prototype implementations adds a sense of real development to the project. Since simple graph theory topics are an important aspect of a computer science education, the project also gives an opportunity for the students to present their tool at local and regional computer science meetings that encourage student participation.

Using Graph Theory Visualization to Motivate Software Engineering Concepts

Previous studies have demonstrated a close relationship between early Parkinson’s disease and functional network abnormalities. However, the pattern of brain changes in the early stages of Parkinson’s disease has not been confirmed, which has important implications for the study of clinical indicators of Parkinson’s disease. Therefore, we investigated the functional connectivity before and after treatment in patients with early Parkinson’s disease, and further investigated the relationship between some topological properties and clinicopathological indicators. We included resting state-fMRI (rs-fMRI) data from 27 patients with early Parkinson’s disease aged 50–75 years from the Parkinson’s Disease Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI). The results showed that the functional connectivity of 6 networks, cerebellum network (CBN), cingulo_opercular network (CON), default network (DMN), fronto-parietal network (FPN), occipital network (OCC), and sensorimotor network (SMN), was significantly changed. Compared to before treatment, the main functional connections were concentrated in the CBN after treatment. In addition, the coefficients of these nodes have also changed. For betweenness centrality (BC), the FPN showed a significant improvement in treatment (p < 0.001). In conclusion, the alteration of functional networks in early Parkinson’s patients is critical for clarifying the mechanisms of early diagnosis of the disease.
