In this Review Article, we discuss a range of soft x-ray power diagnostics at inertial confinement fusion (ICF) and pulsed-power fusion facilities. This Review Article describes current hardware and analysis approaches and covers the following methods: x-ray diode arrays, bolometers, transmission grating spectrometers, and associated crystal spectrometers. These systems are fundamental for the diagnosis of ICF experiments, providing a wide range of critical parameters for the evaluation of fusion performance.

In both particle physics and muon applications, a high-resolution muon momentum measurement capability plays a significant role not only in providing valuable information on the properties of subatomic particles but also in improving the utilizability of cosmic ray muons. Typically, muon momentum is measured by reconstructing a curved muon path using a strong magnetic field and muon trackers. Alternatively, a timeof-flight and Cherenkov ring imager are less frequently applied, especially when there is a need to avoid a magnetic field. However, measurement resolution is much less than that of magnetic spectrometers, approximately 20% whereas it is nearly 4% or less when using magnets and trackers. Here, we propose a different paradigm to estimate muon momentum that utilizes multiple pressurized gas Cherenkov radiators. Using the fact that the refractive index of gas medium varies depending on its pressure and temperature, we can optimize the muon Cherenkov threshold momentum levels for which a muon signal will be detected. In this work, we demonstrate that muon momentum can be estimated with mean resolution of σp/p < 20% and mean classification rate of 90.08% in the momentum range of 0.1 to 10.0 GeV/c by analyzing optical photon signals from each Cherenkov radiator. We anticipate our new spectrometer will significantly improve quality of imaging and reduce scanning time in cosmic ray muon applications by being incorporated with existing instruments.

Development of Compact Muon Spectrometer Using Multiple Pressurized Gas Cherenkov Radiators

Muography is an imaging technique that can be used to examine the interior structure of large-size objects. The technique is based on measurements of the absorption of cosmic-ray muons passing through the object under study. Muographic imaging was already successfully applied to the discovery of a new void inside the Great Pyramid of Khufu at Giza, Egypt. With the aim of studying the Pyramid of Khafre, the second largest pyramid at Giza, a new muography detector is currently being constructed. In this paper we report on the development of a corresponding new simulation framework of the Great Pyramids and the detector setup. This simulation will serve as a basis to develop the data and image reconstruction algorithms to be used during our future muography campaign in the Pyramid of Khafre, and will allow us to study the relevant experimental conditions at the site.

Simulation Studies of a Novel Muography Detector for the GreatPyramids

Cosmic-ray muons which impinge upon the Earth’s surface can be used to image the density of geological and man-made materials located above a muon detector. The detectors used for these measurements must be capable of determining the muon rate as a function of the angle of incidence. Applications of this capability include geological carbon storage, natural gas storage, enhanced oil recovery, compressed air storage, oil and gas production, tunnel detection, and detection of hidden rooms in man-made structures such as the pyramids. For these applications the detector must be small, rugged, and have operational characteristics which enable its use in remote locations, such as low power requirements. A new muon detector design is now being constructed to make measurements on the Khafre pyramid, in Egypt, to look for unknown voids that might exist in the structure. The new detector design uses monolithic plates of scintillator with wavelength shifting fiber optic readout to obtain location information. This design will meet the operational requirements, while also providing a geometry which can be modified for different measurement conditions.

Novel Muon Tomography Detector for the Pyramids

Diagnostics in high energy density physics, shock physics, and related fields are primarily driven by a need to record rapidly time-evolving signals in single-shot events. These measurements are often limited by channel count and signal degradation issues on cable links between the detector and digitizer. We present the Ultrafast Pixel Array Camera (UPAC), a compact and flexible detector readout system with 32 waveform-recording channels at up to 10 Gsample/s and 1.8 GHz analog bandwidth. The compact footprint allows the UPAC to be directly embedded in the detector environment. A key enabling technology is the PSEC4A chip, an eight-channel switch-capacitor array sampling device with up to 1056 samples/channel. The UPAC system includes a high-density input connector that can plug directly into an application-specific detector board, programmable control, and serial readout, with less than 5 W of power consumption in full operation. We present the UPAC design and characterization, including a measured timing resolution of ∼20 ps or better on acquisitions of sub-nanosecond pulses with minimal system calibrations. Example applications of the UPAC are also shown to demonstrate operation of a solid-state streak camera, an ultrafast imaging array, and a neutron time-of-flight spectrometer.
