A critical review of the standard paradigm for the origin of Galactic cosmic rays is presented. Recent measurements of local and far-away cosmic rays reveal unexpected behaviours, which challenge the commonly accepted scenario. These recent findings are discussed, together with long-standing open issues. Despite the progress made thanks to ever-improving observational techniques and theoretical investigations, at present our understanding of the origin and of the behaviour of cosmic rays remains incomplete. We believe it is still unclear whether a modification of the standard paradigm, or rather a radical change of the paradigm itself is needed in order to interpret all the available data on cosmic rays within a self-consistent scenario.

The origin of Galactic cosmic rays: challenges to the standard paradigm

The amplitude and phase of the cosmic-ray anisotropy are well established experimentally between 1011 eV and 1014 eV. The study of their evolution in the energy region 1014-1016 eV can provide a significant tool for the understanding of the steepening ("knee") of the primary spectrum. In this Letter, we extend the EAS-TOP measurement performed at E 0 ≈ 1014 eV to higher energies by using the full data set (eight years of data taking). Results derived at about 1014 and 4 × 1014 eV are compared and discussed. Hints of increasing amplitude and change of phase above 1014 eV are reported. The significance of the observation for the understanding of cosmic-ray propagation is discussed.

Evolution ofthe cosm ic ray anisotropy above 10 14 eV

The arrival directions of Galactic cosmic rays (CRs) are highly isotropic. This is expected from the presence of turbulent magnetic fields in our Galactic environment that repeatedly scatter charged CRs during propagation. However, various CR observatories have identified weak anisotropies of various angular sizes and with relative intensities of up to a level of 1 part in 1,000. Whereas large-scale anisotropies are generally predicted by standard diffusion models, the appearance of small-scale anisotropies down to an angular size of 10 degrees is surprising. In this review, we summarise the current experimental situation for both the large-scale and small-scale anisotropies. We address some of the issues in comparing different experimental results and remaining questions in interpreting the observed large-scale anisotropies. We then review the standard diffusive picture and its difficulty in producing the small-scale anisotropies. Having set the stage, we review the various ideas and models put forward for explaining the small-scale anisotropies.

Origin of small-scale anisotropies in Galactic cosmic rays

Cosmic ray anisotropy has been observed in a wide energy range and at different angular scales by a variety of experiments over the past decade. However, no comprehensive or satisfactory explanation has been put forth to date. The arrival distribution of cosmic rays at Earth is the convolution of the distribution of their sources and of the effects of geometry and properties of the magnetic field through which particles propagate. It is generally believed that the anisotropy topology at the largest angular scale is adiabatically shaped by diffusion in the structured interstellar magnetic field. On the contrary, the medium- and small-scale angular structure could be an effect of non-diffusive propagation of cosmic rays in perturbed magnetic fields. In particular, a possible explanation of the observed small-scale anisotropy observed at TeV energy scale, may come from the effect of particle scattering in turbulent magnetized plasmas. We perform numerical integration of test particle trajectories in low-$\beta$ compressible magnetohydrodynamic turbulence to study how the cosmic rays arrival direction distribution is perturbed when they stream along the local turbulent magnetic field. We utilize Liouville's theorem for obtaining the anisotropy at Earth and provide the theoretical framework for the application of the theorem in the specific case of cosmic ray arrival distribution. In this work, we discuss the effects on the anisotropy arising from propagation in this inhomogeneous and turbulent interstellar magnetic field.
