Exploring the Potential of Using an Ai Language Model for Automated Essay Scoring

This study explores the effectiveness of ChatGPT as a tool for evaluating linguistic accuracy in second language (L2) writing, situated within the complexity, accuracy, and fluency (CAF) framework. By using the Cambridge Learner Corpus First Certificate in English (CLC FCE) dataset, an error-tagged learner corpus, it compares ChatGPT's performance to human evaluators and Grammarly in assessing errors or accuracy rates across 232 writing samples. The findings indicate a strong correlation between ChatGPT's assessments and human accuracy ratings, demonstrating its precision in automated assessments. In comparison to Grammarly, ChatGPT shows a closer alignment with human judgments and students' writing scores. Thus, ChatGPT can be a potential tool for enhancing efficiency in L2 research and L2 writing pedagogy. 

Testing the viability of ChatGPT as a companion in L2 writing accuracy assessment

In the era of digital transformation, engineering design presents new development prospects. The key to conceptual design of engineering equipment lies in optimising structure configuration and effectively utilising knowledge support. Existing research focuses on the guidance of design methods to design activities and the auxiliary reasoning of knowledge systems, but ignores the close connection between knowledge systems and design activities. How to establish a coupling mechanism between knowledge systems and design activities to improve the accuracy of knowledge reasoning for structure configuration is the current challenge. Knowledge Graph (KG) has the advantages of structured organisation of heterogeneous knowledge and efficient knowledge retrieval. A framework for using field-based knowledge graph-assisted conceptual design (Field-KGCD) to support structure configuration of engineering equipment is proposed. Triples of structural entities and their interaction relationship are extracted from patent documents by event extraction technology. Energy sources related to structure interactions are used to establish the association relationships between different structure entities. Knowledge retrieval and recommendation strategy based on graph algorithm is proposed to achieve accurate knowledge assistance in the design process. A case study on the conceptual design of engineering drilling equipment demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed approach.

Talmy’s cognitive-semantic typology divides languages based on how path and manner of motion are generally encoded, but recently some studies have suggested that the original typology needs re-examining either by adding a new type (e.g., Slobin, 2004) or using a cline rather than a two or three-language division (e.g., Ibarretxe-Antouñano, 2009). Furthermore, Matsumoto (2003) has suggested that Talmy’s original typology should be founded on the heading of a language, rather than the original terms of satellite and verb. This study observes Persian motion events through this concept to help determine if an intermediate language can neatly fit into a single category when analyzed based on heading, or whether a new cline based on heading should be considered. We compared data from a translation corpus of the short story “A Christmas Carol” using a representative verb-framed and satellite-framed language (i.e., Japanese and English), and found that Persian shares some path encoding tendencies with both English and Japanese, but also has significant differences, which suggest it could perhaps be better described as fitting on a cline of path-salience, rather than simply placed in either category.
