Gender and Well-Being Interactions between Work, Family and Public Policies

In this article, I discuss the presence and power of guilt in health and fitness discourses. As an intangible force, guilt has material—often negative—effects on women's lives; it is an active ingredient in gendered societal messages celebrating and moralizing an idealized fit feminine body. I invoke “the imperative pathway” to illustrate how discourses around women's exercise, health, and bodies create an impasse fraught with guilt feelings: complex social forces impose a nexus of competing responsibilities and expectations, even while bodies impose physical limitations. Ultimately, I question the ethical sensitivity of health and fitness promoters who induce guilt feelings.

En las sociedades contemporaneas, un conjunto de transformaciones sociales y culturales han vuelto problematicos el uso y distribucion del tiempo en la vida cotidiana de las mujeres. En Chile, los estudios sobre el tiempo han contribuido a visibilizar los problemas que las mujeres enfrentan en la gestion del tiempo en su vida cotidiana, pero han relegado a un segundo plano la relevancia de la agencia para la experiencia temporal. Este articulo introduce el concepto trabajo temporal para mostrar empiricamente las estrategias que las mujeres chilenas despliegan en la configuracion de su experiencia del tiempo en la vida cotidiana. Se concluye que, a pesar de la relevancia de la agencia para la experiencia temporal de las mujeres en Chile, esta continuaria siendo ampliamente determinada por las desigualdades y asimetrias de la organizacion social del tiempo y sus contradicciones relacionales, institucionales y estructurales.
