The use of sunlight to drive chemical reactions via photocatalysis is of paramount importance towards a sustainable future Among several photocatalysts, earth-abundant polymeric carbon nitride (PCN, often wrongly named g-C3N4) has emerged as an attractive candidate due to its ability to absorb light efficiently in the visible and near-infrared ranges, chemical stability, non-toxicity, straightforward synthesis, and versatility as a platform for constructing hybrid materials Especially, hybrids with metal nanoparticles offer the unique possibility of combining the catalytic, electronic, and optical properties of metal nanoparticles with PCN Here, we provide a comprehensive overview of PCN materials and their hybrids, emphasizing heterostructures with metal nanoparticles We focus on recent advances encompassing synthetic strategies, design principles, photocatalytic applications, and charge-transfer mechanisms We also discuss how the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of some noble metals NPs (eg Au, Ag, and Cu), bimetallic compositions, and even non-noble metals NPs (eg, Bi) synergistically contribute with PCN in light-driven transformations Finally, we provide a perspective on the field, in which the understanding of the enhancement mechanisms combined with truly controlled synthesis can act as a powerful tool to the establishment of the design principles needed to take the field of photocatalysis with PCN to a new level, where the desired properties and performances can be planned in advance, and the target material synthesized accordingly

Supercapacitor is a promising energy storage device with the advantages of fast response to electrochemical process, long service life and high-power density. Scientists in the world have devoted a lot of efforts to the development of electrode materials with high stability and high capacity. Functionalized nanostructured carbon materials have attracted much attention and become the key electrode materials for energy storage in high-performance supercapacitors. Among various structures, the heteroatom-doped and three-dimensional (3-D) graphene materials have unique advantages. The heteroatom-doped structure provides many active sites for electrochemical reaction, and the three-dimensional structure promotes the ion transfer in the electrochemical process. In this review, the preparation methods of heteroatom-doped 3-D graphene materials and their applications in supercapacitors are systematically reviewed, including the preparation methods of heteroatom-doped graphene, the preparation methods of 3-D graphene materials, as well as the designing principles and case analyses of single-doped, double-doped, and triple-doped graphene in the application of supercapacitors. This review aims to provide theoretical guidance for the design, preparation, and performance optimization of heteroatom-doped 3-D graphene materials for the practical application of supercapacitors in the future.

Graphitic Carbon Nitride as a Catalyst Support in Fuel Cells and Electrolyzers

In this work, we reported a ternary sensing material using graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets as sensitization modifier for zinc oxide (ZnO)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) rather than widely reported noble metal nanoparticles. The nanostructures of 2D graphene oxide (GO)-hybridized by g-C3N4 were synthesized in advance by combining ultrasonic dispersion and electrostatic self-assembly strategy. ZnO nanoparticles were coated on GO/g-C3N4 through a hydrothermal process, in which GO was totally reduced to rGO. Compared with pure ZnO and ZnO/rGO, the ZnO/rGO/g-C3N4 nanocomposites exhibited a remarkable enhancement in the responses to ethanol vapor. The ternary nanocomposites showed the highest response of 178 (Ra/Rg) to 100 ppm ethanol at 300 °C with a detect limitation lower than 500 ppb, which was about 2-fold and 9-fold higher than ZnO/rGO and pure ZnO samples, respectively.
