Supply chain management and advanced planning : basics, overview and challenges

The emerging paradigm of agent-based computation has revolutionized the building of intelligent and decentralized systems. The new technologies met well the requirements in all domains of manufacturing where problems of uncertainty and temporal dynamics, information sharing and distributed operation, or coordination and cooperation of autonomous entities had to be tackled. In the paper software agents and multi-agent systems are introduced and through a comprehensive survey, their potential manufacturing applications are outlined. Special emphasis is laid on methodological issues and deployed industrial systems. After discussing open issues and strategic research directions, we conclude that the evolution of agent technologies and manufacturing will probably proceed hand in hand. The former can receive real challenges from the latter, which, in turn, will have more and more benefits in applying agent technologies, presumably together with well-established or emerging approaches of other disciplines.

Artificial intelligence in supply chain management: A systematic literature review

This paper is a review of research into the impacts of sharing production information on the supply chain dynamics. The purpose of the review is to understand the needs to unravel such impacts on the supply chain design and management, to identify the current research frontier and to study the future trend in this field. The scope of the review is somewhat broad in the sense that more than 100 relevant publications resulting from major research projects and originating from some leading research groups are selected for review. In order to maintain the necessary coherence and consistency, this comprehensive review proposes a loose reference framework to reflect major elements commonly involved in this type of research, including the decision level investigated, supply chain structure, research questions addressed, factors involved, supply chain dynamics measured, modelling methodology adopted, data analysis technique used, and findings and insights from the managerial perspective obtained. The impacts of sharing production information on supply chain dynamics: A review of the literature

The supply chain is a worldwide network of suppliers, factories, warehouses, distribution centers, and retailers through which raw materials are acquired, transformed, and delivered to customers In recent years, a new software architecture for managing the supply chain at the tactical and operational levels has emerged It views the supply chain as composed of a set of intelligent software agents, each responsible for one or more activities in the supply chain and each interacting with other agents in the planning and execution of their responsibilities This paper investigates issues and presents solutions for the construction of such an agent-oriented software architecture The approach relies on the use of an agent building shell, providing generic, reusable, and guaranteed components and services for communicative-act-based communication, conversational coordination, role-based organization modeling, and others Using these components, we show two nontrivial agent-based supply-chain architectures able to support complex cooperative work and the management of perturbation caused by stochastic events in the supply chain

Agent-Oriented Supply-Chain Management

Reports on the use of our own agent and coordination technology to model, design and simulate global, distributed supply chains. We show by non-trivial examples how supply chains can be naturally modeled, simulated and improved in this way, within a short development time and with reduced human resources. As the agent technology was primarily built for the implementation and control of distributed systems, the simulation models can be reused with minor modifications for actually controlling distributed supply chains. In this way, the presented agent technology gives us a powerful approach to life-cycle support of supply-chain information architectures.

Agent based design and simulation of supply chain systems

Agents are software components that support the construction of distributed information systems as collections of autonomous entities that interact according to complex and dynamic patterns of behavior. A major problem of multi-agent structured information systems is the coordination of these interactions and behaviors to achieve the goals of the participants and coherence of the system as a whole. This paper articulates a precise conceptual model of coordination based on a representation of coordination knowledge as plans described in a special planning language enhanced with communicative actions. The execution of these plans by agents results in multiple structured ‘conversations’ taking place among agents. The model is extended to a complete language design that provides objects and control structures that substantiate its concepts and allow the construction of real multi-agent systems in industrial domains. To support incremental, in context acquisition and debugging of coordination knowledge we provide an extension of the basic representation and a visual tool allowing users to capture coordination knowledge as it dynamically emerges from the actual interactions. The plan-action organization exhibited by the coordination language departs in several ways from the standard object orientation of computational languages and is, we argue, more appropriate to modeling coordination. The language has been fully implemented and successfully used in several industrial applications, the most important being the integration of multi-agent supply chains for manufacturing enterprises. This application is used throughout the paper to illustrate the introduced concepts and language constructs.
