PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a moving distance of the center of gravity of luminance, and reduce the animation false contour by arranging plural maintaining discharge periods to display the same luminance so as to continue with a constant period of a single field. SOLUTION: A single field is constituted of, for example, five sub-fields SF1 to SF5 and a single common sub-field CSF6. The sub-fields SF1 to SF5 are constituted of a rehit period and a writing address period, and relative luminance of respective maintaining discharge periods is 1:2:4:8:16. A maintaining discharge period to display the same relative luminance is provided, and is intensively arranged in a constant period in a single field, and is constituted so as to emit the light from the maintaining discharge period arranged in a central part, and a moving distance of the center of gravity of the emitting light when respective relative luminances are displayed can be reduced. Therefore, since nonuniformity of a light emitting pattern is reduced when a plasma display panel displays an animation, generation of an the animation false contour can be reduced.

Maximum gray level difference data (Dc) included in the area of the original data (Ds) where the smoothed data (Df) are calculated are created (S4). The mixing ratio of the (n + α)-bit original data (Ds) and the smoothed data (Df) is created in such a manner that the smaller the maximum gray level difference data (Dc) gets, the greater the ratio of the smoothed data (Df) to the original data (Ds) gets (S5).
