Sentiment analysis (SA), also called Opinion Mining (OM) is the task of extracting and analyzing people’s opinions, sentiments, attitudes, perceptions, etc., toward different entities such as topics, products, and services. The fast evolution of Internet-based applications like websites, social networks, and blogs, leads people to generate enormous heaps of opinions and reviews about products, services, and day-to-day activities. Sentiment analysis poses as a powerful tool for businesses, governments, and researchers to extract and analyze public mood and views, gain business insight, and make better decisions. This paper presents a complete study of sentiment analysis approaches, challenges, and trends, to give researchers a global survey on sentiment analysis and its related fields. The paper presents the applications of sentiment analysis and describes the generic process of this task. Then, it reviews, compares, and investigates the used approaches to have an exhaustive view of their advantages and drawbacks. The challenges of sentiment analysis are discussed next to clarify future directions.

A comprehensive survey on sentiment analysis: Approaches, challenges and trends

Human-in-the-loop aims to train an accurate prediction model with minimum cost by integrating human knowledge and experience. Humans can provide training data for machine learning applications and directly accomplish some tasks that are hard for computers in the pipeline with the help of machine-based approaches. In this paper, we survey existing works on human-in-the-loop from a data perspective and classify them into three categories with a progressive relationship: (1) the work of improving model performance from data processing, (2) the work of improving model performance through interventional model training, and (3) the design of the system independent human-in-the-loop. Using the above categorization, we summarize major approaches in the field, along with their technical strengths/ weaknesses, we have simple classification and discussion in natural language processing, computer vision, and others. Besides, we provide some open challenges and opportunities. This survey intends to provide a high-level summarization for human-in-the-loop and motivates interested readers to consider approaches for designing effective human-in-the-loop solutions.

A Survey of Human-in-the-loop for Machine Learning.

The advent of Web 2.0 and its continuous growth has yielded enormous amounts of freely available user-generated information. Within this information, it is easy to find subjective texts, especially on social networks and eCommerce platforms that contain valuable information about users. Consequently, the field of opinion mining has attracted considerable interest over the last decade. Many new research articles are published every day, in which different artificial intelligence techniques (e.g., neural networks, fuzzy logic, clustering algorithms, and evolving computing) are applied to various tasks and applications related to opinion mining. Given this context, this survey presents a rigorous review of the different applications of fuzzy logic in opinion mining. The review portrays different uses of fuzzy logic and summarizes over one hundred and twenty articles published in the past decade regarding tasks and applications of opinion mining. This study is organized around three primary tasks, feature processing, review classification and emotions and also pays special attention to sentiment analysis applications whose core technique uses fuzzy logic to achieve the stated goals.

Fuzzy logic applied to opinion mining: A review

Recently, deep learning based techniques exploiting reviews are extensively studied for rating prediction and result in good performance. Some studies consider word level review information along with attention mechanism to capture the most influential content, thus making the methods even complex. Deep neural networks with Depthwise Separable Convolutions have made significant progress in the area of image and video analysis. The success of these techniques encourages adopting them towards improvements in rating prediction using review text. In this paper, we present a novel CNN based architecture with Depthwise Separable Convolutions and Combined Kernels (CNN-DSCK) for rating prediction exploiting product reviews. In the proposed method, we use two parallel CNNs with Depthwise Separable Convolutions to extract semantic features from the text reviews of users and items using different kernels in parallel and then select the important information from these features through pooling. Finally concatenate the pooling information obtained from different kernels in each network. The features obtained through each network are then fused and the most relevant higher-order features are extracted through fully connected dense layer at the top of network. Extensive experiments on real-world datasets demonstrate that CNN-DSCK significantly outperforms state of the art baseline models.

With the growth of online information, varying personalization drifts and volatile behaviors of internet users, recommender systems are effective tools for information filtering to overcome the information overload problem. Recommender systems utilize rating prediction approaches i.e. predicting the rating that a user will give to a particular item, to generate ranked lists of items according to the preferences of each user in order to make personalized recommendations. Although previous recommendation systems are effective in creating attired recommendations, however, they still suffer from different types of challenges such as accuracy, scalability, cold-start, and data sparsity. In the last few years, deep learning has attained substantial interest in various research areas such as computer vision, speech recognition, and natural language processing. Deep learning based approaches are vigorous in not only performance improvement but also to feature representations learning from the scratch. The impact of deep learning is also prevalent, recently validating its efficacy on information retrieval and recommender systems research. In this study, a comprehensive review of deep learning-based rating prediction approaches is provided to help out new researchers interested in the subject. More concretely, the classification of deep learning-based recommendation/rating prediction models is provided and articulated along with an extensive summary of the state-of-the-art. Lastly, new trends are exposited with new perspectives pertaining to this novel and exciting development of the field.
