Aromatic polyimides have excellent thermal stability, mechanical strength and toughness, high electric insulating properties, low dielectric constants and dissipation factors, and high radiation and wear resistance, among other properties, and can be processed into a variety of materials, including films, fibers, carbon fiber composites, engineering plastics, foams, porous membranes, coatings, etc. Aromatic polyimide materials have found widespread use in a variety of high-tech domains, including electric insulating, microelectronics and optoelectronics, aerospace and aviation industries, and so on, due to their superior combination characteristics and variable processability. In recent years, there have been many publications on aromatic polyimide materials, including several books available to readers. In this review, the representative progress in aromatic polyimide films for electronic applications, especially in our laboratory, will be described.

Progress in Aromatic Polyimide Films for Electronic Applications: Preparation, Structure and Properties

Polyimide-based composites reinforced by carbon nanotube-grafted carbon fiber for improved thermal conductivity and mechanical property

During the last decade, advances have been made in nanotechnology using nanomaterials, leading to improvements in their performance. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been widely used in the field of sensor analysis and are also combined with certain materials to obtain the desired characteristics. AuNPs are commonly used as colorimetric sensors in detection methods. In developing an ideal sensor, there are certain characteristics that must be met such as selectivity, sensitivity, accuracy, precision, and linearity, among others. Various methods for the synthesis of AuNPs and conjugation with other components have been carried out in order to obtain good characteristics for their application. AuNPs can be applied in the detection of both heavy metals and biological molecules. This review aimed at observing the role of AuNPs in its application. The synthesis of AuNPs for sensors will also be revealed, along with their characteristics suitable for this role. In the application method, the size and shape of the particles must be considered. AuNPs used in heavy metal detection have a particle size of around 15–50 nm; in the detection of biological molecules, the particle size of AuNPs used is 6–35 nm whereas in pharmaceutical compounds for cancer treatment and the detection of other drugs, the particle size used is 12–30 nm. The particle sizes did not correlate with the type of molecules regardless of whether it was a heavy metal, biological molecule, or pharmaceutical compound but depended on the properties of the molecule itself. In general, the best morphology for application in the detection process is a spherical shape to obtain good sensitivity and selectivity based on previous studies. Functionalization of AuNPs with conjugates/receptors can be carried out to increase the stability, sensitivity, selectivity, solubility, and plays a role in detecting biological compounds through conjugating AuNPs with biological molecules.

Gold Nanoparticle-Based Colorimetric Sensors: Properties and Application in Detection of Heavy Metals and Biological Molecules

Electromagnetic parameters regulation is still a formidable task in developing lightweight, wide bandwidth, and high-efficiency electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption materials. Here, a facile technique has been proposed by taking full advantage of 3D integrated hollow E-glass fabric, which is characterized by the typical spatial characteristic forms (U-shaped hollow structures at the level of the centimeter) to regulate EM parameters, optimizes impedance matching and enhances the absorption ability of graphene nanosheets (GNs). The minimum reflection loss (RL) of the 3D integrated hollow GN/resin composites reached −49.3 dB with an effective absorption bandwidth (RL < −10 dB) of 12.4 GHz. Comparing the density of the novel composites to that of conventional EMW absorption materials, it is lowered by an order of magnitude (0.31 g cm−3). Moreover, a good temperature drop of 100 °C was observed under an infrared thermal imager. The results indicate that the composites not only effectively alter the propagation path of EMW, increase the EM energy losses in the transmission process, but also block thermal convection and show excellent thermal insulation properties. This study provides an aggressive strategy and effective method for the development of lightweight ultra-broadband absorbing and excellent thermal insulation composites.

This paper employs an attention based convolutional neural network long short-term memory (A-CNN-LSTM) approach for the prediction of metasurface transmission spectrum. By inputting the pixel map of the metasurface structure, the trained A-CNN-LSTM model can quickly output corresponding transmission spectral data. The experimental results for different metasurface structures show that the A-CNN-LSTM has higher accuracy compared with the traditional CNN and CNN-LSTM models. And they agree well with traditional FDTD software simulation but can be much faster.

Prediction of Metasurface Transmission Spectrum Based on An A-CNN-LSTM Approach

Reducing the phase transition temperature (Tc) of VO2 films to achieve the application in the field of Smart Home is still a challenge. Thus, in the work, the ultra-thin VO2 films with different Mo doping amounts were successfully prepared by an economic sol-gel method and atmosphere annealing, aiming to further investigate the mechanism of the decrease of Tc. The results show that the VO2 films with 3 at % Mo doping possess the Tc of 29.5 °C. Notedly, in the as-prepared films, the maximum transmittance in the visible region (Tvis) is 46.3 % and the solar direct transmittance (Tsol) is 45.8 %. According to the XPS spectra, it is confirmed that the Mo doping prominently induces the valence change of V ions from +4 to +3, inhibiting the strain in the phase transition process of VO2 films, and leading to the decrease of Tc. Our work will provide a feasible solution for reducing the Tc of the ultra-thin VO2 films.

This paper presents a broadband, high gain antenna design consisting of a combination of flexible dual-layer electromagnetic band-gap (EBG) material and a conventional microstrip patch antenna. The frequency dependent reflection and transmission characteristics of the two EBG layers are used to enhance the impedance bandwidth and the realized gain of the antenna. Simulation results show that a 3 dB increase in antenna gain in-crease (from 7.35 dBi to 10.4 dBi) can be achieved with the flexible dual-layer EBG superstrate applied at target frequency of 3.4 GHz. A noticeable increase in impedance bandwidth can also be observed. Furthermore, simulations in bending conditions demonstrate that the performance of the proposed structure remains stable with the deformation and hence is suitable for application required flexible textiles. In cases where a compact design is desired, the proposed structure allows the antenna metal ground plane size to be reduced to 72% of its original size while maintaining a relatively stable gain, without necessarily requiring a large ground plane comparable to the EBG structure. Another advantage is that the dual-layer EBG structure can achieve an increase in both gain and bandwidth for single linearly polarized antennas. This study illustrates the performance enhancement and effectiveness of applying flexible EBG superstrated to form broadband and high gain antenna.
